Well today I got my new yearly yellowbook.........so I go to the tree section to see my new ad (which I think this is my last year) & to my amazement theres like a gajillion new tree services in there!!!

Holy hell.........some of em say 10yrs, 15yrs experience, fully insured!, we carry work comp, etc..etc.. I love the guys who do it all, they build decks, patios, excavate, trim & remove trees, diagnos, treat,...............ah hell, they shoot fire out there ass they`re so talented!!

any one else notice a surge in newcomers & the wonderful lies they spin to try to make themselves look good? I though it was bad with some of the regulars who still "top".....but advertise proper tree care..LOL, Now not only do I have to compete with the regular retards I have to compete with the new wannabe idiots!! Hmm....maybe that state licensing thing I complained about wouldnt be a bad idea!

I just see this trade getting polluted to the point of a wage plummet that would make one working at wal-mart look good!!!

LXT...............

Lately to be an expert at something all you have to do is take a Magic Marker and write it on the sides of your truck. Sad thing is customers are too stupid to know any better and only care about the lowest price.

Now remember when there was that thread about regulation and I am pro-licensing and somebody called me an assclown or something and I said if there is not some sort of system to slow down the illegals and the wannabes we will all be working at wal mart in a couple of years? Well, it's happening. Down south there are more little "packs" of illegals going around trying to do tree work than you can shake a stick at. We just had a run in with some of them stealing wood. And I just got the new yellow pages and Lord O' misery where did all these losers come from.

If your trucks big enough why would you need a saw? I do find big tree removals makes my CD player skip pretty bad.

Lol. That reminds me of when my buddy thought it would be a great idea to take down some small White Pines at a rental we were at by pulling them out with his pickup.

He got a couple out then came the biggest where he really needed to get a run at it, pulled his bumper into a V-shape, laughed my but off. Of course he's holding a 24oz beer out the window the whole time, lol. Got video of it somewhere too.

A) punk stoner kids financed by their parents.:msp_sneaky:

B) problematic ex-employees who think, "hey, I can do all this on my own!":msp_sneaky:

C) semi skilled wannabes from other service trades who think a $2000 tree,
done for $800 in 2 days is still good $$.:msp_sneaky:

D) all of the above.:hmm3grin2orange:

And the answer is? D in my experience.

Sadly they all are just a flash in the pan, and they do more damage to the industry in general by driving prices down, than they do tearing up jobsites.:msp_mad:

I will say this, again, for the benefit of new folks, in here: Without enforced regulation, and tough licensing standards by testing and a fee-based, yearly renewal program, the future of running a tree business as a good income-producing option is virtually over in the next 3-5 years. Yes, the mega-corp companies will endure, by and large, but those of us in the middle will no longer be able to live up to any standard where we can respect ourselves and provide for our families as illegals swarm the country and desperate "others" with no experience, whatsoever, take to the trees to earn their $20-50/day subsistence-level survival pay. I came to the trees from another profession, tattooing, where weak to comical regulations and enforcement allowed everyone and their uncles to start a shop in Texas. When I came into that business, I was the third shop in Austin and the first licensed one in the State of Texas. When I left, twelve years later, there were 45 shops licensed in Austin and another fifteen underground. My income went from great to pitiful in that time period. The exact same thing is now happening in the trees. Those of you against licensing and tough enforcement have your heads so far up your :censored: that you can't see the light, at all.

Exactly........ You can claim to be anything you want, it's not until it's too late that the customer is victim of property damage or a scam. I see that CL has been too flooded with hacks and scam artists, now some of them are bringing their lies to the yellow pages. Too funny. I'm glad the majority of my work is referral, I'm so done with this BS......

And PS, my market research shows it's a total waste of money advertising in the phone book anymore....

It's only a matter of time. Everybody says "it'll never happen to me, my company does quality work", blah blah blah. Eventually, when you're the 8th or 9th add down under all the hacks and illegals, you wont even get a chance to bid.......

As a matter of fact, I don't even mark trees anymore when I go out to bid, and if they are marked already by a customer that has hired me, I tear the markers off. Too many trolls rolling in pickups trying to lowball.. They can F O.

Good post and I know exactly where you are coming from. You would think a thread like this would be burning up with replies but it's not. Have you figured out why???

Don't forget the ----ing a--clown customers who go running after these morons with cash in hand to have them do their s--t worst on their trees!!!!

It's a sign of the times and shape of our economy. When things pick up...and they will in the not too far future...those people will fly off to do something else, (back to construction, etc), and leave the real tree people to do what they do best.

I wish I could find the signs to justify your optimism. I see things getting markedly worse in the coming years. The complete world order and economy will never be the same, to the detriment of the USA.

Well, no offense to the original poster but....lack of replies could be because this topic is old news. It still sucks but its just not a new problem. I think lxt was venting as much as anything. He asked a question that he already knows the answer to. And thats fine. Atleast you wont have to worry about yellowpages or yellowbook as we know them much longer. Internet is king. The younger folks tend to throw away phone books as soon as they get them. Although you can lie online just the same..easier i guess.

And come to think of it....I def remember, over 20 years ago..my boss and foreman talking over a few beers about how all these idiots with a saw , ladder , and a pick up are ruining the industry and pretty soon we will all be ruined. But since then I have seen plenty of legit companies grow. Although maybe the "soon" they spoke of is getting here. IDK..but I think this is a good time to be "the little" guy. No big payments is nice these days.

But being stuck in neutral with little to no yearly growth can be pure hell too!
