On a saw eqivalent to 372 which chain would be faster in say 14 inch softwood and which one fastest in hardwood. Both chains being the same type and filing?

Frank

3/8 in most cases because of your power
now on a saw with more power and both chains done to there max it would be close now that there is better 404 being bulit

The new kind of course. It has the lower teeth for better bite and the rackers are higher than the teeth. Clean that gullet ya big mullet.

I might be a little weird, but this flys in the face of all reason.

Ehp:

You mentioned that in a lot of competitions altering of the chassis of the chaain is not allowed. Are you still allowed to remove material to thin the cutters. It would seem that aside from slender and very sharp edges on the cutters, winning competition is more and more in the engine mods.

i honestly think that the way we are building now that the saws are as strong as we can make then, i can build a saw now and break the crank from just power so unless you can build a better crank there is no reason to try for more power but the chain now is the area that hopefully we can make better
on thinning the chain most places will not allow it so we have spent time on making the stock chassis work ,i believe what Tommy F. is building is as good as it gets for a race chain , so how much faster is he than mine , i donot know because we have never compared them but if i am close i would be very happy.
what most guys donot understand on making a race chain for someone else that you donot know how the guy runs a saw , light or heavy ,and how much power does he have. i know for myself i can usually get a saw to cut up to 10% faster if i have the saw to mate the chain to it than if i just send a chain to you
now i feel i have got a good race chain on the stock chassis, nobody seems to be blowing us away at the races but then it could be the motor to
the chain i am using in .404 is the 59L series and it seems to be working well,it just to cold to tell forsure but the first warm spell we will be outthere seeing what the rotax likes

Crofter, I've won a lot of races having a better chain than a better motor, but having the best combination is what your looking for. Don't forget about how you run the saw either!, I've seen the best motor and best chain beat themselves. Dennis
