First off as a new member I want to thank you folks for the info I've gleaned off of some old posts. I recently purchased an Asplundh chipper #JEX8454. When I told a "friend" about some unchipped stringers coming out of the chute my problems began. My "expert" adjusted the blades and evidentally did not tighten them to proper torque. I don't have to tell you folks what happened on startup. I've ordered new blades and read some of your posts on adjustment(a little late I'm afraid). My drum and "wedges" look pretty rough,I've cleaned them up with a file and grinder, but will admit to being nervous about reassembly. I've bought all new wedge bolts and plan to torque to 120lbs. Do I adjust the blades even with the margin on either edge? Then adjust bottom "blade" to .032" ? I don't want to screw this up AGAIN! If someone has a manual I can purchase, or I would happily pay for copies, I would be most appreciative. I can tell not knowing how to work on this machine could be expensive or get me killed! Thank you all so much. FireLane

Mollasses in January

I emailed Altec Tom,so far no response. I'll have to call them during the day,but that pesky job of mine gets in the way! For me maintainance gets done at night, hate to waste daylight. Thanks again, were my specs close?

"customer service"

So I called and talked to Erin in parts and he said they don't have to provide parts or service for my machine because it's over 25 years old.:confused:They could sell me a manual for a new machine tho. Does anyone know if that would be worth bothering with? Certainly makes ya think when they say "customer service". Here I'm trying to do the right thing and buy the darned manual and they're not much help. I guess I'll have to ask "Ol Lefty" how to adjust it. We always sent the new guy on the jobsite to "Ol Three Fingers" to show him how to run the saw.LOL Thanks guys for any help you can give. FireLane

Re:

Sorry about that. I know where you can purchase a newer one though. Go and look at the following website to see if there is anything that wets your lips.

Squeeky Wheel

So I called and expressed my "mild displeasure" to customer service after getting the cold shoulder from parts. Suddenly several manuals appeared in stock. Sure they're $50 but I got a manual on the way. My thanks to Harvey and Rusty at Altec. Both knew the manuals were available and helped me out. Sometimes it's luck of the draw with who answers the phone. Thanks guys for the help. FireLane

The manual

So I order the $50 manual and with shipping and such it comes to $62. It shows up and it's a little paper folder jobby. It does not cover the motor, clutch or much else. It does show blade adjustment and I'm happy for that. I do have to make a call to Altec. If I showed you my $62 manual you'd crack up laughing! Just warning the rest of you out there.
