why dont spell check recognize the word arborist?

Spell check and dictionaries are written by people with degrees in English. There is a lot of things they don't know.

really weird, I juuuust noticed that yesterday and was going to start a thread...it is odd though!:monkey:

why dont spell check recognize the word arborist?

Because it's a spell checker - not a dictionary. At least not an unabridged dictionary.

There may be special software for people who need unabridged distionary capabilities for spell checking.

GOOD POINT! Go and see if you can find it any dictionary too! Nowhere recognizes the word arborist. I hate when people ask what you do, you tell them and they go 'arborwhat?

I grabbed my Webster's dictionary from the shelf by my desk - it's got arborist and arboriculture.

What the he!! are you guys talking about? My websters also shows the word arborist and wikipedia lists it too. And if you can't spell arborist by now, you're in trouble. :monkey:

LATE again Dammit! I just checked the edition of my Oxford Concise English Dictionary. 1982! I must stop living in the past LOL!

Too bad there isn't a gramar check for ya also. (doesn't instead of don't)

:jester:

Are you sure that "wouldn't" is not the right word ?

Or is it "doesn't" ?

Is one based on reason or cause, and the other on the will to do?

You're way off. Just type them out and listen:

Why doesn't spell check recognize the word arborist?
Why wouldn't spell check recognize the word arborist?

The question originally posed was not theoretical about the validity (present tense, active voice: the negation of "Why would spell check recognize...) of "arborist" in the dictionary, it is clearly asking why it is not currently present. If you are not able to distinguish the two different purposes, it is probably because you have already added the word to your computer's dictionary, and for you it has become a theoretical question, rather than a problem to solve.

I suppose that you could also read the second choice as "past tense, passive voice" where the question intended was "Why would spell check not recognize the word arborist" If read that way, it would be a reference to a past condition, not the present condition.

To answer the original question: right mouse click on "arborist" where it is underlined. Choose "add to dictionary". Problem solved.
