Another trip to the dump, another unknown wood.

Very light. Felt like I was lifting poplar. Splits like butter.

Another forum said Catalpa. Thoughts?

This wood also a very distinct smell that's hard to describe.

After you say smell I'm guessing Sassafras - the bark doesn't look quite right to me though. It is one of the easiest woods to split though and it does have a distinct smell.
 
I've split sassafras before, and it has a very citrus like smell to it, along with the Orange tones in the bark. This smells completely different.

I don't think this is Sass, unless there are different species of it.

The split one looks like Sasafrass. Smell can vary a bit. Cross section is sometimes odd shape, not round, sort of oval/lobed, if that makes sense. If it was Willow I would think the end grain would be fuzzy, not clean cut.
 
Not sass. Got into some longer pieces with the saw and the swampy smell was much more evident than when splitting. Sass smells so much better.

Thanks for the help! I suppose the btu for this stuff sucks.
