I agree it looks like black walnut except the seasoned cut piece is so light colored. I think black walnut stays dark after its seasoned. if it turns out to be black walnut be careful where your cutting it. black walnut puts out a hormone called juglone and its toxic to tomatoes, potatoes, asparagus. apple trees, pear trees, silver maples and many other plants and trees.

Are there other trees close around it that you can identify? It looks like almost all the leaves laying around it are in the red oak group, but leaves can blow around. Bark has similarities to red oak also, besides looking like walnut. Split a piece and look for the ray flecks of oak, although there are people who can identify oak from end grain pictures. If there are any twigs attached to it that you can split to check for chambered pith, that would be a good way to see if it's walnut.

My initial thought before I read down the thread was hickory. Bitternut or mockernut. I cut some shellbark tops that further down the tree kinda looked like that as well.

Unless there is oak with out typical divits under bark. A few limbs that bark fell off is smooth

The pics are great by the way. Thanks for them.
That one of the standing trunk is all Red Oak to me. Just the way the limbs look and are all gnarly and coming off of the main trunk at almost 90*. That's Oak characteristics more than Hickory.
Looks like a lot of my Red Oaks here.
I say Red Oak.
Great firewood after two year seasoning at least.
Enjoy and be careful felling that trunk.

Sure looks like walnut to me. After it seasons awhile, it will get lighter - same with old furniture. Darkness can vary from tree to tree. I've seen some as light as butternut and some so dark you almost can't see the grain. Seems like too much heartwood for hickory.

Ok looked around .Never found any signs of walnuts on ground . But are there are hickory nuts. But as said earlier there are shag barks around.
