What is the best and best priced wood spitter? I'm just a home owner. I would only be using it a few times per year.

I recently bought a True Temper fib. handle splitting axe. 4# head that has just a thin rib on each side for width. Skeletonized? I like it a lot better than my mauls. Four lbs. swings nice. Any body else used one of these?

Tractor Supply sells two HUSKY splitters. Have used both and thay both do a great job. I have the 35 ton one now and it does anything I want it to. USed the smaller one a lot and it also did most everything but the hardest oak with the strangest grain. Just cut those with a saw.

Pea,

John and Stumper were telling you the truth. The best splitter for the money is "armstrong" powered. A maul or good axe will take care of most splitting duties. If you want to try a different type of axe buy the Fiskars (same as Stihl only cheaper). They are razor sharp and split great. It will be the last axe you will buy. The big problem is the handle is too short. If you are really wanting a gas splitter then build your own. You will get a better splitter for the money. That is unless money is not an object. If that is the case then check out a Timberwolf.

Bill,
Thanks but I don't want to make more work for myself. I want to make less work. That's like telling someone to go get an old crosscut saw to cut wood and not buying a chain saw.

Pea, Not exactly. For difficult/stringy woods even a little, slow hydrolic splitter does save a little work. For straight grained, easy splitting stuff I used to split by hand faster than a man with a single pass splitter could process it--and it was easier on the back and a lot of fun. My favorite splitting tool was/is a 6lb maul. If you have to drive a lot of wedges and/or fight nasty grain then a heavier maul is preferable and a hydrolic splitter better yet. For the fun stuff a 6 lber makes it easy to add a little flip at the end of a swing and pop the wood cleanly.

Stumper,
Thanks for the advice. I have a monster mall, a lady monster mall, a mall i used as a kid for my dad and of course wedges. I have split wood a lot. I'm really not a beginner in that area. I do thank you for the advice. This is a really great web site and you are all real helpful people. I enjoy it a lot. Have a great summer

Pea,

Are you using it for personal firewood? If so, I would think the Arms-Strong 6 with a fiberglass handle would do the job fastest. Unless of course you are splitting Elm. What I advise for Elm of any kind is to take the larger wood that requires splitting to the landfill.
