I have a friend that moved into a rental house that has a wood stove insert (can't tell what brand). The fireplace has an odd setback in the masonry to the right side of stove, with some insulation stuffed between the stove and bricks. When we started the stove, some smoke came out around the side until we got a good draft going. The hole is about 4" deep and 11" high. Any suggestions for sealing up this hole better? Also, anyone know what brand/model stove this is?

Thanks,
Joe

nothing should be coming out from behind there
it should have a liner attached to the output flu of the stove
if not then yea your just dumping all the smoke and everything else into the space between the stove and the chimney

pull the surround off and see what is there

even if you get a small piece of liner and attach it to the output of the stove and partially into the chimney that will be better cause you can seal up the gap with some high temp insulation

The brand is Blaze King I believe don't know the model. Good stoves they looked like that in the 70's/80's. Should be a metal tag behind the shroud next time you pull it out to clean
