I just bought a new home with a wood stove. I'm not sure if its installed correctly. The stove is in the basement there is a 6 in clay liner coming threw the basement wall, the liner is squarish and the stove pipe is round goes in to this liner. Which leaves a gap at the corners of the junction. I was just wondering if this was OK.

Yep! Do you have the square sheet metal spark arrestor at the top of the chimney? It's a square/rectangular piece of sheet metal with a round 6-8"hole in the center for the stove pipe to pass thru and the mesh spark arrestor attaches to it. Clay is perfect for heat displacement. I have the same setup in my Living Room and it works great. If you need pics let me know.

Some pictures would be helpful I have no sheet metal parts except stove pipe. I'll take pics of my set up tomorrow.

Looks like who ever built your chimney was a cheapskate. That part shouldn't be square it should be round! The square liner like that is used in the vertical chimney as a liner. The part where your stove hooks into is called the thimble and should be round.

he's right. Should be a thimble. Made of the same material just round. As messed up as that is it would work if you sealed it up properly. Or remove it and a few block around it and redo it with a thimble. What part of Ohio you from? I'm a brick layer in the Cleveland/akron/canton area.
