I am looking to buy a new wood stove. Right now I have an Osburn 1600 which is a nice stove but it will not sustain a fire long enough. I live in Alaska and need a good wood stove that will hold a fire for a good 4-5 Hrs or more what do you recommend? I have looked at the Blaze Kings and does the Catalytic converter really that good?

I upgraded stove last year for the same reason, burn time. I went with a Napolean 1400 after much reading around the net. I am overjoyed. My old stove would only do about 3 hours at best and that was until nearly out. My napolean easily does 12 hours and that leaves plenty of red coals, just add more wood and its off and going. I also added the blower option about a month later, it works fantastic, it allowed me to run the stove even lower for the same heat output and lowered room to room differences.

Look into the Jotul stoves. They are really well made and non-cat. I have the Oslo.

I went and looked at Jotul stoves this evening! WOW! Good material, well made and they look good! But, boy the big one has a big price$! I think I need to look for a " slightly used one"! Are there any out there?

3 hour burn time, I thought my old wood furnace was bad at 6 to 8 hours. Im sure a cat stove gets a longer burn time than a non cat. Once the cat is at the firing temp, they can be turned down for a longer burn time.

Stoves

I like Buck 81,91. Steel.
They are rugged and can easily keep fire overnight.
The Harmon looks tough, but doesn't have a blower.
The Bucks will really circulate, $1600-1800.

Napolean 1400

I also have the Napolean 1400 model. I highly recommend it. It is a great stove! It is capable of long burn times and is really efficient. I have the blower option on mine and with it on it will run you out of the room!

I have a Harman Magnafire Mark I. It's a heavy constructed coal stove in which I burn nothing but wood. I heat 2500 sq ft with it easily, keeps fire all night and house is warm as toast. I would go with the "Mark II", if I had to do over again, simply because the one I have now will only except a log up to 14" long, which is nice in way because they are easy for the wife and kids to handle, but I can't buy any commercially cut and split if I wanted to. Plus, I don't have to pack big logs to the splitter either. A friend has burned wood in the bigger "Mark II" for about 25 years and they are still built the same and can add coils to heat water too. Very well built, air tight, with a blower. If it's built for coal, it can take all the wood you can give it!

Might look into it, heres a link:

They also build regular wood burning stoves too.

Jotul vs Harmon? I know Harmon is built in the USA! Jotul has been built in a cold Norway since 1853. What do you all think out there? Both are cast and look nice. I don't know! Please give some of your thoughts. Thanks!

That's a nice looking stove, Rspike. You must appreciate the long burn time as well. Loading up a stove every few hours isn't my idea of fun, so I could see how that would come in handy.

RE: original

Ok thanks all for your input. I want you all to know, I live in Alaska and the only wood around to burn is Black Spruce and Aspen, I do not have the luxury of burning hard wood. Neither Spruce nor Aspen is good for burning so would it be more beneficial to get a Cat stove rather than a non-Cat? I have been doing some research on wood stoves Yes I checked out Jotul, Hearth, Vermont castings, Lopi, Harmon, Blaze King, and I own an Osburn. Well As I all ready stated I live in Alaska so I pretty much have to go with what they sell in Alaska which is Vermont Casting, Hearth, Jotul, Blaze King and Osburn. Price wise they are all about the same the one thing that impresses me the most is what Blaze King has to say about there stoves. We all know that a MFG will brag about there product and say mine is better they yours, Example Ford, Dodge, Chevy ect… but well also have to keep in mind that if they don’t tell the truth about something they can be sued for false advertisement so please read what Blaze King has to say about there Cat stoves and tell me they are not great stoves. The main reason I posted this thread originally was in hopes that some one had one of these blaze kings and could tell me how good it would burn on less then perfect cord wood (i.e. hard woods). Thank you all again and please feel free to explain why you think blaze king is good or bad I am very interested I would like to know more.

Please I visit this web site then tell me what you really think http://www.blazeking.com/manuals/Brochures/Brochures 2006/70796 King.pdf
