I got a set of tongs last winter to haul out wood, I had been cutting it up and putting it on clamp on forks but I had to get it6 feet or less so I could drive around. The tongs are well worth it. I took out a maple from a thick area that can be swampy at times but we had a dry spell. My last grab I was spinning out but the chains did the trick.

I have been using tongs for years. I usually bring my wood home in log lengths on a dump trailer. Just dump on the ground and drive off. I use the tongs on a fel to separate the pile to make bucking the rounds easier. I'll usually drag a couple of logs out of the pile to lay on the ground and then place the rest of the logs on top to keep it off the ground. Buck the wood and then take the FEL to push the rounds into a pile for splitting.
