I've started my Jonsered 90 project saw. Earlier tonight I was installing a carb kit on the Tillotson HS. I saved installing the main diaphragm until the last, only to find out that the guide & screw holes in the kit diaphragm don't match up to the carb. Yes, I should've checked all of the pieces before I installed anything. In the kit the main diaphragm & the gasket are separate, & the gasket matches the carb just fine. The one that I removed from the carb is one piece, maybe original. I have 2 kits, so I checked the 2nd one--same problem.

Has anyone had any recent experience with bad carb kits? I'm wondering if there is something that I overlooked (a very real possibility), or are suppliers knowingly/unknowingly selling bad kits? I purchased the kits from Manufacturer's Supply, part 38-3644, carb kit replaces Tillotson RK-23HS. I'm going to call them tomorrow, but I wanted to get some input here.

Any experiences, advice, educated guesses, & even half azzed opinions are welcome.

Thanks,

Chris Jones

Chris-

sounds like you got the wrong kit. I've installed literally over a thousand carb kits in the last fifteen years and I've only had one kit that had an error. Are these actual Tillotson carb kits you're using or an aftermarket copy?

Jacob, They're probably aftermarket

kits. I don't find a manufacturers name on the package, the instruction sheet, etc. Are the actual Tillotson kits marked? Another odd thing is the instructions that came with the kit show a diaphragm cover retaining screw & lockwasher, which isn't on the carb.

I did a lot checking on the net, & I believe that for the Tillotson HS, RK-23-HS is the correct Tillotson # for the full rebuild kit, & RK-17-HS is the gaskets only kit. If I'm wrong I'm sure that someone will correct me.

Jacob, who would you recommend as a good source for legit (or at least quality aftermarket) kits? All help is greatly appreciated.

Chris

Bailey's sells it. In their catalog they list it for a couple Husky saws, but it's an OEM RK 23 HS kit, $6.95. I should stock up, got 7 or 8 saws that use the HS carb.

Oh, Tillotson kits are marked with a big logo on the bag.

"RK" is "Rebuild Kit" with everything in it. We don't stock the diaphragm kit but I believe they start with "DS" Or "DK" for diaphragm set or kit.

Aftermarket stuff in this category is a chancy deal, OEM kits are not out of line at all so why mess with aftermarket.

Having correct diaphragm sent.

I called Manufacturer's Supply, & spoke with a guy (who gave his name as Roxanne-???). He checked the two kits that they offer, & sure enough the diaphragms are different. He searched their catalog, & had me go on-line to compare the diaphragm that came off the carb to the one they have has an individual part. That one looks right, & they're going to mail me 2 of them.

Thanks to Jacob, Chris B, & Nevadawalrus for your reponses. In the future I'll get the actual Tillotson kit from one of sponsors, & be sure to check everything first. Live & learn!

Carb kits

Just, per chance,is the correct kit #38-1544.I have had the same problem,in the past, which is why I have all these carb kits, that fit nothing I own.:(

Al, the main diaphragm in kit 38-1544

seems to be the correct one. I'm new at this--I didn't realize that there were differences in the HS kits, other than one is gaskets & diaphragms, & the other also has the welch plugs, inlet needle, etc.

This might be of help. The two diaphragms that mfgsupply.com are sending me are part # 38-3654 (one metering diaphragm only), which looks like a match to the one in kit 38-1544 that you mentioned. It also appears to be a match to the one that came off the carb (I certainly hope so). Their toll free # is 1-800-826-8563. Maybe you'll get to speak with "Roxanne."

Thanks to all, Chris Jones

They made good

I received the correct diaphragms from Manufactorers Supply on Wed of last week. I thought it only fair to mention that they did took care of this PDQ.

I only wish that Wyomingben on ebay was as quick. 2 1/2 weeks & still no chainsaw manual; 3 email inquiries & not a single response. Maybe I'm being inpatient. Me? Never. Update: The manual arrived today. My reference library is growing....
