On the way home from work the other day, I saw this guy (trying to) cut down a tree along the road. He had the tree somehow hung on top of the "stump" four feet off the ground, and was hacking away lower down. I was going by at about 40 MPH, so I didn't have a whole lot of time to see what the heck was going on.

I went by the next day with camera in hand, and this was what I found. I guess his hacking away at the bottom didn't work out as planned, but it looks like he got it down without killing himself. (at least I didn't see any squish marks in the shape of a person)

Serious question: I'm wondering what people are thinking when they slash a tree at multiple angles and heights like that. Maybe they think that they are "softening" the tree and one of them is going to bring it down?

Looks like how my Amish neighbor cuts down trees here. He is originally fro Lancaster County PA. Could this be something? When he gets back on his feet I am going to show him how to drop trees with out killing himself. It just scares me to see his stumps. A beaver on crack could do a better job.

Around here they are motorized. Still horse and buggy to town but tractors on steel wheels. And not old tractors either. Even the ones that don't use tractors or any modern farm equipment still have chain saws. Their saw mills might be ancient technology but the saws they cut the logs with at up to date.

The bar was too short. Totally unclear on the concept of short bar, large tree, and how to do it.....

Big question is was this guy standing on a ladder???

Wow!, nice pix!

Yea, you're probably right about the short bar thing. There was no ladder that I recall seeing, but it was unnerving seeing him crouched down hacking, while the rest of the tree was hung on top of the stump.

Boboak, no joke. This guy was frightening.

Sorry folks, I didn't note what saw he was using. I was too engrossed with the hang up.

After consulting with my friend the chainsaw tracking expert (name is: runs with scissors) we've detwrmined these to be the tracks of a wounded Troy-Bilt chainsaw. Built in some tiny country in the Pacific these creatures, much like the DoDo are too stupid to survive. I see extinction for the saw itself and serious injury to anyone (like the DoDo) dumb enough to attempt such a feat.

Our initial conclusion was "Tree-Suicide" after noticing the numerous stutter-cuts, you see, the tree has to develop the courage to go through with it. A lack of any instument in the photo and the fact that the tree could not reach that far made this theory implausible.

Could someone PAAAALEASE put that tree out its misery.

Its hurts to look at it!

You guys crack me up! :hmm3grin2orange: :hmm3grin2orange:

This is better than TV!

And I am actually learning a few things too!
