Those who like to modify the squish suggest measuring the squish prior to the disassembly. This confuses me because most of the saws I tear down have 0.010 to 0.020" of accumulated carbon deposits around the top. So once you clean this up when rebuilding, how does the initial measurements help you?

Well ...

It sounds counter-productive to me.

If you measure prior to disassembly: You then increase that number by cleaning out the carbon build-up. That number is then decreased (by how much?) when you remove the crap stuck to the bottom of the cylinder and on the case; the stuff you don't measure.

Makes no sense to me either.

Ahhhhh, only for new saws! That makes more sense. Someday I'm going to get me one of those new saws rather than the carcasses I can afford! But I don't think I will tear it apart unless I have to. :)
