Just picked up a nasty sthil 031 AV out side a friends shop door. He told that so and so had brought it for him to scrap out since it is seized up. Is there a place to buy new cylinders and pistons it the crank is OK? it is a 44mm cylinder right?

Yes they're 44mm. I don't know about new but there are used oem on eBay.
I wonder if a 45mm p/c from an 032 would work.

Best bet is to find a doner saw with a bad ignition.

I haven't seen much aftermarket stuff for these 031-032 saws except maybe fuel lines and filters..

Thanks for the offer, I need to get it torn down first. I'm have a problem just removing all the plastic from around the jug.
