Hi,

I pay about $46 per $100 of payroll for workers comp insurance. My business is in Connecticut. Anyone know of a way or a company that can lower my costs on my workers comp insurance??

Thanks,

John

You pay a 46% workers comp "tax"? I'm not an employer but that seems excessive! Are those numbers correct?

Yes...46%. Its not a tax, its workers comp insurance. Its outrageous for the logging/forestry industry. For about $20,000 in payroll my first year, I owe over $9000.00. Dont know the exact number, it makes me sick when I look.

That's really not too bad.

Some years ago I was paying almost 100% insurance rate on tree wages.

There are several approaches for reducing the insurance bill. You can reduce the amount of "high rate" payroll, you can reduce the total amount of payroll, and you can work on ways to reduce the rate you pay for WC.

**********************************************
The best and quickest way is to divert as much of your payroll into other (lower rate) categories of employment. Almost everything is lower than tree work. Keep a rigorous record of time spent doing tree work, and time spent on other activities like driving, ground work only, cleaning up around the shop, etc.

Your workers comp bill is based on your payroll, and that can be divided into a number of categories. My groundmen are kept in the category of "Park NOC", which is basically gardeners. When my tree climbers are climbing, they record the number of hours on their time cards as "tree wages", and then the WC rate goes up. Make sure that you are not paying mechanics, office help, or salesman at the tree WC rate! Huge over-run on WC expense there!

There are a large number of dirty tricks that can be used to keep the amount of payroll in tree wages as low as possible. I won't go into that here, but you can use your imagination. Keep in mind that any dirty tricks on payroll reporting are probably not legal.
***********************************************

Then there are ways to get your basic rate down. There is an organization called NCCI that keeps a record of all your WC claims. You can contact them and they will get you a copy of your experience mod. They may have other helpful ideas, although I would bet against it. Very bureaucratic, a pain to deal with in my experience. Your insurance agent can help you get this also:

National Council on Comp. Ins.
Midwestern Division
P.O. 19430
Springfield IL
62794-9430
1-217-793-1100 1800-622-4123 cust serv

They compile a very complex formula into a number called your "experience mod". It is CRITICAL to keep this number LOW! Your are obliged to report every little minor injury that your men report. Technically, a non-expensed report of injury is not supposed to add to your experience mod ("mod"), but I think it does.

You are allowed to pay up to $500 (in Missouri) for small medical claims to help keep your "mod" lower. DO IT! The number of claims reported is as important as the size of the claims, so it is essential to keep the number of claims as low as possible.

Watch all your medical bills for errors and unnecessary items. Use a medical clinic for small injuries that specializes in business and WC claims. A clinic like that is much cheaper than an emergency room.

If you have a serious problem that requires a specialist, try to go straight to the specialist, rather than going through the emergency room first. A good example is foreign objects in an eye: take them straight to the ophthalmologist. Lower bill, quicker fix, less frustration than the ER.

See if your WC carrier has any medical advisory capacity. Some of them will work with you to see how you can keep your bills lower.

Fight fraudulent claims ruthlessly! There needs to be the prevailing attitude among your workers that a fake claim for injuries will cause their life to be ruined to the best of your abilities. At the same time, you need to make sure that they are taken care as well as possible, so that they do not become angry at you and make small claims worse than they are.

I hope some of that helps. I could go on a lot longer, but payroll needs to be done!

+100 to pdqdl's post.

Years ago I helped rewrite the software that calculates the rates and compliance for various state WC boards. The formulas are quite complex and do vary from state to state. Some states allow the insurer's to set the rates others have the rates set by the state, some even use a hybrid state/commercial rate setting formula. They mostly have the same idea of what makes up the rate but the specifics and methods of how they arrive at those rates vary. The head of each states bureau administers and helps set the policies for the WC rates. The heads as far as I could tell were appointed. An important factor in the rating is the "class code" that pdqdl talked about. I do recall that during testing we would make up class codes to see how the system would behave.

There are ideas such as Experience, Merit, Assigned Risk and many more.

This state is a bigger rip-off than Taxecuettes. No wonder our former governor went to jail. They should lock just about the whole bunch up. The legislature is crying that they don't have money to put violent felons in jail. Yet, they tried to pass a law that would allow in-state resident tuition rates to illegal aliens! Our only hope is that a giant meteorite squashes us all like bugs and we get to start life again--without government!

it's amazing isn't it?

they say they have no money but i watched one tractor with 8 dump trucks following it up and down RT 2,I-384,and RT-17 in december ,january, and febuary.guess what they were doing?

THEY WERE MOWING GRASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and no one says a word.glad i wasn't born and raised here.well, maybe it wouldn't bother me as much if i had been programed as a child.

i think the worst part of WC (40% here in ohio) is the fact that you have to lowball your employees. I try to hire young and inexperienced ground people who i can train so that i can start them off at $10.00 hr. i feel bad having to offer that kind of pay to a guy who has bills to pay. this whole subject takes up space in my thoughts more then i think it should.

You guys need to learn some of the legitimate & sneaky ways to reduce the bill. Read my first post, then read between the lines.

I try not to report any more tree wages than I have to, because the rate is SO high. I finally got my mod below 1.0, but it used to be up around 1.4. I was getting killed by WC.

Put the money you save back into wages for better help. Poor help is a worse drain on your profits than any insurance bill.

no employees for me.

i bought a tractor instead.

i work with two other tree companies on the big jobs.we share on those.we all have something to lose and we all WORK.each has just as much invested as the next guy.it gets done safer and no drugs or no shows.we work well together and learn from each other.i wouldn't have it any other way.we each have different equipment so it works out there too.

Yet Another Example How Corrupt CT Is

All over the news yesterday, how Connecticut's $150 million surplus has turned into a $100 million deficit! That's a spending spree of $250 million! Give me a break.

Hi John,

I do logging supervision and timber development in British Columbia. Your rates are obscenely high - just for comparison heres what we pay per 100$ payroll for a couple of different types of logging occupation.
http://www.worksafebc.com/insurance...cation/browse_rate_groups/rategroup.asp?rg=DR

And here are the rates for 'tree services' - arborist, topping, line clearence, etc.
http://www.worksafebc.com/insurance...rowse_sectors_and_subsectors/cu.asp?id=764062

Both of these occupations are related and are in the top 3 of dangerous occupations in this area.

Work Safe BC (formerly workers compensation board) governs standards for training and worker safety for all sectors in the Province of BC. Alot of those standards (safe work procedures), although sometimes they seem excesssive are pretty much key to keeping our rates down. Even with that there were around 130 or so people killed on the job in various sectors last year....and many more injured or maimed. I don't know the systen in Connecticut, but making sure your people are competent and certified and have sound work procedures may be one way.

Everyone keep your heads up and focus on the task at hand -be safe!

Yeah..I guess sue-age is bit of an issue in the land of litigation. And those compo rates are only a portion of it (not really a good comparison then I guess). Guess thats why people say we Canadians are too polite. On top of those rates everyone obviously pays third party liability insurance as well....the arborist / urban tree removal types definitely will pay more due to what they are working in and around - I wonder what kinda of liability insurance narcoleptic james has?
