They both got the same treatment. Complete teardown, paint, decals, new bearings, rings, gaskets, seals, lines, carbs etc.

There about as close to new as I can get them.

The one with the full wrap handle was sent to me by a great AS member up in Canada. He found it on Craigslist and graciously picked it up and mailed it to me. I want to at this time make a public thank you to him. If he want's to identify himself that's up to him, but I won't.

I had the good full wrap handle to put on the one from Canada and since it don't allow the saw to sit flat, when you have a long bar on it, it just nose dives. I figured since this one will not get run much it would look good with a set of west coast style dogs on it.

Problem is I never seen any for a 5200, so I decided to make my own. I think they turned out ok.

What do you guys think?

Look Super! The fun part is putting them back together with fresh paint. Again, they Look Super!

Great, great work Mark. Those west coast style dawgs look remarkably close to the long dawgs that were available for the 8500 for a time. My dad had two of the 8500s new when they first came out that he used in bigger timber near the coast. He said at the time, they were good saws with better handles and dawgs than anything else he could buy. Later he went to the Stihl 064 when it first hit the shelves, but kept his Poulans as back-up saws.

I suspected that the big dogs might have been in use on 8500's but I never seen any on a 5200.

I'm not really into the full wrap/big dogs but this particular full wrap set the handle bar farther forward, which I like. I got one more 5200 to do and it has a non padded wrap handle that does not set forward like this one. Its the one I plan on keeping and useing so this half wrap on the other one here may end up on it.

5400

I have one that runs wearing a 24" Oregon powermatch, It still wears the scars from
logger use in the late 70's. I replaced the piston assembly sometime in the 80's, found
a used handle bar & clutch cover, pulled the worn out .404 spur and replaced with a rim
3/8.
I was not aware of HS governor valve issue until I read Modified Marks posts.

WAHOO ! Mark that is some real sweet work you did there! Seems a trip south of the border does great things for a saw.I would never believe that was the same saw.Congratulations are in order. Thanks for the kind words you gave me!

Very nice looking pair. Do you need my address now to ship that one with the wrap handle to?

For what its worth Mark... I am not easily impressed, and not typically WOW'ed by many restores I see on here or elsewhere. Yours, is truly the exception. Absolutely beautiful work, beautiful paint, and beautiful saws. Any man in their right mind would be floored by your workmanship. EXCELLENT!
Bring those honeys to Ohio sometime so we can throw some chips!
