I picked up a John Deere Chainsaw. I was told it's a 88 or 8800 (can't remember) and the same as the Homelite 540. It has a red Homelite 540 Cover on it but the rest is yellow. The tank is Metal. This is were it seems odd. Anyone out there know what the JD model would be. Trying to sort of some details before I figure out whether to keep it, sell it ( No idea of a price) or ???

I know the 8800 could be had in a cut off saw configuration and was sold as the JD MP88.

Still looking for the handle/tank assembly for my 540.

All I can tell you is that the 8800 Homelites command a high price but I can not even being to give you a estimate of its worth. I know there was one sold on here not to long ago, maybe that seller will chime in here at sometime.

A few years back I posted a link to a useful chainsaw manufacturers cross reference document/chart, but I'll be damned if I now can find the thread/post :msp_angry:.

If I downloaded the doc it must be on my virus-infested computer :computer2:.

Ok Kids break out the popcorn. Here is the Pics. Here's where i'm at the with the saw. I pulled the covers. The Cylinder has a few broken fins and the coil wire has a spot that is it is taped where it would rub the cylinder. The top cover has a crack on the side that I didn't notice till I took it off. Basically it was dropped at one time and landed upside down. I blew the saw off. If fired up with a few pulls at first. As soon as it was warm it would fire on the first pull. I made a video. The oiler Does not work. It barely trickles out. It obviously does not have the correct Starter cover since it's a John Deere saw with a red Homelite 540 cover.

This is a metal tank. Fill me in with more details if you can.

I think the John Deere versions were 540s, not 8800s. We had one come through the shop years ago and it was the 540 version with open transfer ports. They're not the greatest runners.

The 540 has the cylinder fins parallel to the base of the topcover. The closed port 8800 jugs have the fins angled upward. On the red ones, the plastic tanks were 540, and the 8800 "reverted" to metal. Not sure what JD worked out with them, but that one has the closed port top end. Shame about the broken fins. I really want to be interested in that saw.... I have so many projects already, that I am becoming overwhelmed. I am going to fade away and pretend that you didn't mention anything about selling.

I think it's a JD CS550

If memory serves me JD had the Homelite 8800 badged as a CS550.
