As stated, that number is an identifier on the engine shrouds but doesn't indicate what model the saw is. My 026 and 036 both have the sticker on them.

Hi,

I was just wondering what is the stihl 311y? Does it compare to another saw? I thought it was similar to the 310, but it doesn't look like it.

thanks

If your saw doesn't have the 026, 028, MS290, MS310 or what ever numbers, post a pic of it in here the guys will tell you what it is and give opinions of that saw.

That's what I was wondering. I thought it was a ms311 at first, but it is not. The top cover is gone along with the sticker on the handle. The only one left is the 311y sticker. Sorry don't have any pictures right now.

It has the small aircleaner cover like a 026 or 024. It's not a clamshell engine so not the 290-029 style.

Where is the easiest part number to find to i.d. a saw. The cylinder part number is behind the clutch side of the housing so I can't read it. Is there some place easier?

No flippy caps still has screw caps with metal chains.

Give this a shot if its a metal front handle 1/2 wrap right at the two bottom mounting holes the four digit number? 11??

The numbers will be hard to read, there tiny.

Here, just find any part number and compare to this, the first 4 numbers are what you need, 11xx

There is no need to pull the jug. You can measure the bore by removing the muffler and sticking a straw (I like the red tubes from lube cans) into the bore through the exhaust and SLOWLY pulling the starter rope until it hits the straw. Then carefully remove and measure. You need to be careful with the straw and not cut it in to. If you are unsure, remove the starter cover and spin the flywheel to move the piston back down once you have marked the straw (or if the saw has an outside clutch, just turn the saw over using the clutch)

Yes, its an 024. Now trying to determine if its a super is the tricky part. If the con rod is stamped I'm pretty sure its a plain 024. If its cast then its a super. Anyone else have tell tale signs of determining the difference?

Btw my apologys to the member I was busting on about using the search feature.

It SUCKS

The super had a 2mm longer stroke than the standard, use the same "straw" method. Remove the plug and find top dead center, place the straw on top of the piston and mark it right at the top of plug threads, move the piston to bottom dead center and mark the straw again. Unfortunately I have no idea what the stroke should be for either variant. I do believe the 024 super had the same stroke as the 026 and you could interchange the top ends, where you could not do the swap on a standard 024.

EDIT:
Just did some searching for ya and found the following info:
024AV has a 30mm stroke
024 Super and 026 have a 32mm stroke

I see what you're saying, but would that work if say the cylinders had different base thickness. And wouldn't that method leave one saw with an extra 2mm squish? Just thinking out loud, its getting late.
