Which Poulan Countervibe do I have?

Picked this up from a junk pile recently and paid $10. Has compression and spark, but I haven't torn into it yet. Feels to me like a 60cc or so. Weighs right at 14 lbs as is. Can you Poulan guys figure it out from the pics? Thanks!

3400/3700/4000, odds are good it's a 3400.
Look into the exhaust port at the piston and see if it has thick rings or thin, 3400 has the thick ones...

My money is on a 3400 with a redneck muffler mod. Got 2 here now missing the filter cover.

Looks to be an early 3400. Has the small screw set up on the rear anti-vibe, and older style oil fill cap. Another way to tell, later ones had more webbing in the case castings at several locations. But, would need another one to see the difference. Piston looks like 3400 also. If nothing else, you have a supply of parts for a better project. The 3400 is 56cc, 3700 61cc, and 4000 64cc.

Looks like somebody split the muffler and used a 16d nail to punch the holes.

Thanks, guys. I hoped I had at least a 3700 here.

Turns out it passed the rope test because the rope was hanging up in the windup assembly. Got hardly any compression in reality, though strong spark, and wouldn't even fire with fuel in the cylinder. Piston on the exhaust side is not scored, however.

Ah well, $10 and a little anticipation can go a long way!

If anyone wants it for parts, lemme know, and I'll just charge shipping. I'm still on the hunt for a project Poulan countervibe of 60-70+ cc, and don't want this clogging up the shop.

The 3400 was never big on compression. Most are in the 130 lb. range, or slightly less. The 3700 & 4000 usually carry a little more. But rarely more than 150 lb. or so.

If you want a power house mid-size Poulan, look for a 4200. (69cc) A little more weight, but a boat load of power. Of course there is always the good old 245A. Older design, no anti-vibe features, but real light for a 74cc saw, of any age.

I personaly use a 4000 more than any other. Good balance of power, anti-vibe, better air filter setup, and they just plain look good.

I use 20" & 24" bars on mine. If I need more saw, then I go with the 4200 or 5200. But thats 85cc.

Some say there isn't much difference in the 3700 & 4000, and I tend to agree. I have never done any kind of test to see. :dizzy:

But, I figure a couple more cc's plus the better features are worth something.

The Poulan countervibes are an old sentimental favorite of mine. A 3700 was what I used when I lived way up in the mountains 25 years ago and needed a lot of firewood. I think a 4000 or 4200 would be about right. I've got them bracketed by strong Stihls, an 034S, 038M and project 048, but would still like to track one down.

The first time I ran some countervibes was at a GTG. I think I ran Gregs, Marks and Mikes. I instantly loved them. :msp_thumbup:

I think ModMark was looking for a starter handle like the one you have.

Seeing Ed's response, reminds me. :laugh:

There are a number of Poulan Pro models out there that might fit your need also. I just don't have much experience with them. But I know Ed & ModifiedMark do.:msp_thumbsup:

The only one I have in that color is a PP375. It is basicly a 3700 with 4000 featues on it, and yellow and black of course. There are a bunch of Pioneer and Jonsered design Poulan Pros out there. I just am not real up to speed on them. I tend to gravitate to the older green ones.
But, I would love to get my hands on a PP655 some time. :bowdown:
