Hello all, new to wood cutting and arboristsite. I have been gathering and selling firewood for the past few months and can't believe all the crap I've found in my firewood. There is nothing worse when the chainsaw is cutting to see a trail of sparks shooting out! So far, I've found a piece of fence, several nails, a screw, several modern .45 bullets, an OLD cast .45 round ball surrounded by about 60 growth rings, and an old cast lead .30 caliber round nose projectile way deep in with a line of pitch behind it where the tree tried to heal. Cutting mostly Sitka Spruce, Cottonwood, some Red and Yellow Cedar, and Alder. What have you run into while cutting or splitting?
Pics are a plus!

Among the junk you found I'll anti up a few ceramic barbed wire insulators. Not the round corner one's ...the cylinder ones you hammer in with a 2 headed nail.

I try not to cut wood that was near a fence line, or if I do use a old pos saw. I haven't found anything that unusual barb wire, horse shoe, all types of different spikes. Anything leaning up against a tree will become part of the tree after years and years. I have seen old farm equipment steel spoke wheels grown right into the middle of trees.

Welcome to the site!

Weirdest thing was a ca. 1950s beer bottle that a tree had enveloped.

I hate finding a nest of ants, especially if the wood is already on my property. Not as bad if I'm cutting offsite, but it's still a shame for a few oak rounds to go to waste.

At least they don't wreak too much havoc on the chain.

And if it's bad for me, I occasionally have an empathic moment and consider things from the ants' perspective. Things can always be worse.:)

An old pipe wrench, found it with my 440 magnum, ripped all the teeth off before I noticed it

Ive found alot of things in wood but the coolest was a kids try-cycle we had to finish that tree with a 10 ton wench because the saw just wouldnt cut anymore then we found out why... And once I was triming a large maple for the city of plainwell and found a old hand pump from a well about 55' in the top of it have no idea how it got up there???. I have that piece sitting in front of the shop for display.

A couple years ago I had some logging done on my property and I noticed that one of my trees that had my screw in steps for my tree stand was cut down. I always wondered if that tree screwed up someones saw.

Well just the other day I found that log in a pile that they had left for me. Its a good thing I seen it or I would of messed my saw up. Now I need to burn it so I can get those steps out. Mystery solved!

Where did the saw hit the wrench?

Where did the saw hit the wrench? Could you post a picture of that area?

Thanks

There was a guy a few years ago on a hunting forum that found and old Remington rifle in a tree... from the looks of it someone had leaned it up against the tree for whatever reason and then left it there....

I know I set that rifle down RIGHT over here!!!!! :) That would be a cool find though.

I run into wire all to often around farmsteads. I had a squrril come flying out of a tree I cut down like he was shot out of a cannon one time that was pretty funny. (he wasnt hurt that was the good thing) :)

A seam of gravel in this oak ruined my day - The stone I sawed into [the nice grey one[ is a little bigger than a golf ball.

I have found clay bricks and wire when using trees from urban timber...

Still looking for a pot of gold.
