No, not some kind of salad dressing. How do you dress your bars? Freehand or something along the Oregon jig style?

Free hand with a mill file. Machines and such are nice for high volume but by hand will work for the DIY backyard chainsaw user. However, I have put a bit of time in on one bar doing it by hand. Sometimes I will use an air powered disc sander to get the bad spots and then go to the file. I have a ton of time in on draw filing from my gunsmiths apprentice days.

I started using a large mill or bastard file (with a handle!), with the bar held in a vise, for filing the rails square.
I use a smaller mill file, with the bar laid flat on a workbench, for filing the burrs off of the side edges.

Then I tried using one of these, and hate to admit how much I like it. I would like it more if it was about half the price (versions also sold by Pferd, STIHL, Vallorbe, . . ):

I picked up a cheap drill press at a garage sale to maybe try the method described in this thread (link below). I wanted something that I could use outside, or in my garage, as I don't like to make sparks in the basement.

I would probably buy the grinder @ValleyFirewood mentioned (also sold by Bailey's) if I did a lot of bars.

The things we talk ourselves into . . .

I like the Oregon bar rail dresser (post above: $38 at Bailey's!), but it has a crack (I got it cheap from a clearance pile, so it may have come that way). I noticed that the Pferd model has a slightly different design, which looks interesting ($25 on TreeStuff). Might be something I could make out of a large diameter, wooden dowel?

Which led me to an Oregon clone on eBay (under $5 shipped, although, I may have to wait until February 1, 2018).

Will let you guys know . . . .

Then - sanding disc in the table saw. In truth, this is a really great tool for truing up a bar but I didn't want to have to clean all of the sawdust out each time I needed to dress one.

Now, this is very handy but I actually liked the finish and ease of the table saw. Big benefit of this one is it is always ready to go.
