Bark looks like Ash.

Oh Forgot to mention The pieces were POPPING like crazy!!! No liquid inside but the pops were loud and not even near knots sometimes.

The smell inside is sutle not strong scented but has a slight mellow scent. Not like Oaks or Pines.

+1... looks more like ash than poplar around here,,, poplar usually has a greenish shade in teh wood,,,any leaves around??

nahh, found the logs on a job site sitting there in winter. Couldn't see any stumps or leaves around. The rings aren't even distinguished.

I'm pretty convinced it's tulip poplar.

Interesting!! No strings at all with this.

It was in the hills of NY. White Plains to be exact. Tulips grow where it's wet a lot. Thijnking about it now....it might have been a part of the property where water sat a lot. Hmmmm.

ive been cutting up some poplars that came down in the storm last week, mine have a dark green circle in the middle of each round and cuts like butter, the bark looks very similar to the ash trees that are around here..but then again i have trouble telling the different between ash and poplar here.. so my vote is for either, although the inside of the wood does not look like the poplar im used to seeing

The bark of tulip poplar looks nearly identical to white Ash. Basswood also has similar bark, a little smother than the other two, but still similar. From what I can tell the wood you have looks more like Basswood than poplar. Basswood is extremely soft wood, and when dry it's as light as a feather.

Few pics of a large damaged poplar I took down a few years ago.

Well tulip poplar does have bark like that Cambium. And yes it does look like ash bark the only way I could tell was looking at the leaves...hard to do this time of year.

I think that looking at the smaller limbs on poplar make it very easy to tell, as they do tend to have some greenish tint and some very distinct markings that I am not able to describe well. Wish I had a picture, cause everyone has seen it and would know what I am talking about. That would does look like tulip poplar to me, which I have always found to split well.

its not ash! for sure ... not stringy enough and too white! poplar it is wood be my say. easy to split and smooth grained.good wood either way for fast hot fires on a cold day/evening.....

Yeah...thats what I'm gonna consider it. Tulip Poplar. Its not heavy at all.

Thanks guys to all who replied.
