Ok it's done.
First I used needle nose pliers to pry back the deflector, then had the drill in there at an angle with 3/8 bit. I would have liked the hole to be further back into the deflector rather than at the end of the deflector. The metal wall was thinner than I expected.

I then used the shop vac to get all the filings out, used a pin punch to get the drill hole flat so I could slide the arrestor shield back in. Just have to touch up the deflector shield with some high temp paint which I didn't have around.

Should give it a shot tomorrow and see how it works.

Thanks to everyone for their help in input

Replaced the Modded Muffler and fired her up. Does not sound a whole lot louder than stock.
Ran her for the first time today. I got the saw when she had run for less than one tank.

Ran her with the Oregon Pro Lite 20" bar with 3/8 RSF ( Full Chisel Skip ) yellow Stihl chain.
First run was on a 16 1/2" piece of Elm that died a year ago and had to be taken down.

I was extremely pleased how she ran, low vibration and balanced well. Seemed to have good power. Next I will test the 20" bar with RS yellow Stihl chain.

Would appreciate it if someone could tell me how to imbed the actual video clip from youtube into the post

A lot of us don't have high speed connections and the real link lets us download the vid, then watch from the hard drive at regular speed, no buffering/pausing nonsense like with embedded. Plus watch full screen. So, I appreciate the direct link, I wish all the vids here, embedded or not, had the direct link with the post as well.

I know I'm a little late, but here's just another example.

This is what Brad did to it, and I enjoy the sound, I'm going to do the same thing to the 2253.

I opened that up more than I remembered. I didn't open this 2253 I have here as much and didn't see the same gains. Guess I'll be going back in there for more. Thanks for the pic.

Are mufflers for the 550xp easily available ? Are they very expensive ? I would like to get an extra one and really open it up. If it's too loud I can put my mild mod muffler back on.

Nice vid! It's pullin the 20 just fine in that size wood.

I think the 'mild MM' is fine on a stock saw. But ported you'd want to open it up more.

Check with TK or Spike60 here for price of a new muff.

Sunfish, thanks.
I think I am going to get a second muffler and really go to town and open it up.
May even try my hand at a little welding. Have a Hobart 140 Handler that I traded for a few years ago and have never used it. Never too late
to start learning a few new skills. Just have to scrounge around for some metal to make the deflector.

I wander what gain I will see with a full muffler mod over the mild muffler mod on the stock 550xp ?

I started my 562xp muffler last night so far all i did was clean out everything between the 2 holes in the baffle through the inlet making one long hole. Now i need to open up the outlet and see how she runs:msp_thumbsup:

Please take pics and post them up. Also post up some video of the saw running when you get her done. Are you going to run a 20" bar.
Did you use a dremel ?

Ran the 550xp today with 20" Pro Lite Bar And 3/8 Stihl Yellow RS Full Chisel Chain. It felt very comfortable and I think it's slightly slower in the Elm than the Skip Full Chisel chain. I think the RS would be better for limbing. The 20" bar really chewed through 8"-10" pieces of Elm.
Still have to try the the Semi Chisel RMC chain which is on the way in the 20" bar.
Will try the 18" pro Lite bar next with the different chains and see how she performs. I am very happy with the 20" bar and like the reach a lot. She balances well with the 20" pro lite bar. I am sure there will be a little more cutting power with the 18" Bar but not worth it to me for the loss of reach, just have to try and see.

try mx-racer,he has done some.he did my 555 ,does a wonderfull job.

Ran The 550XP yesterday with the 18" Pro Lite 3/8 Bar.
Here is the video of the 3/8 Stihl RSF Full Skip Yellow Chisel Chain. She ran well with the 18" bar but I must say that I prefer the 20" bar. It feels like it handles better for me and feels smoother. I don't see a huge difference in the skip and non skip chisel chain and would probably go with the RS non skip chain as there is probably less kickback when limbing. I am going to get a Pro Lite 16" bar and run it just to see what it's all about.
