Don't really want to run the skip but I was given a couple of loops so I thought I would try them. I now know what it feels like.

I probably will run Skip when I get the 28" techlite bar for the 562xp.

Sunfish, thanks.
I think I am going to get a second muffler and really go to town and open it up.
May even try my hand at a little welding. Have a Hobart 140 Handler that I traded for a few years ago and have never used it. Never too late
to start learning a few new skills. Just have to scrounge around for some metal to make the deflector.

I wander what gain I will see with a full muffler mod over the mild muffler mod on the stock 550xp ?

Practice on some scrap sheet metal before trying to weld on your muffler. I suggest using 0.023 wire. It's real easy to add a bunch of small holes you aren't intending to add when welding thin stuff. Pulsing the welder helps from putting too much heat into the metal.

I ran out of gas and tried welding a muffler with flux core wire, it's almost impossible and I spent way too much time fixing burn thoughs and the result is pretty hideous.

Thanks, I definately will practice first. The metal on the muffler is very thin and I was worried about burning through it. Another option would be to just bend the deflector back and open the hole with a dremel. The saw is running so well with the mild mod and is not much nosier than stock I was a little hesitant to open her up due to increased noise.
I am sure I will go back and forth before I decide.

The noise level of a stock chainsaw meets the requirement to wear hearing protection. If your hearing protection is in good condition you will not notice any difference. If you are not wearing hearing protection, if you operate long enough you will slowly not notice the difference with a modded muffler.

I am a stickler for hearing protection and never run any noise producer without it. My main concern is the noise lever for use in housing areas. Trying not to wind people up who are subjected to the noise.

It would be nice if someone came up with a high flow no noise muffler. The problem is the only way to do that would be to make the muffler larger. You simply need a certain volume for the muffler to allow the exhaust gasses to expand and slow down and opening up the outlet of a factor muffler is going to make things louder. I think the key would be to put a small glass pack downstream of the muffler outlet, but where to located it so it won't get in the way?
