Later ones looked like this,
Unless that muffler has been changed the blue XL 12's were the early ones. I grew up with Homelite as my Grandpa was a dealer in the 50's an on. These saws are just way louder than the current ones.
This saw is a 1974 model
Yes the light blue ones were the early versions but they had a fairly long run of production over many years. The earliest light blue XL`s just had a stack type muffler, really not a muffler at all but over the years the mufflers changed up to hollow box types and the last of the light blue ones had a baffle type like the one on my saw. The red models came next and ran until the SXL came out which used the same muffler at least for a while.
Sad deal
God Bless MagnesiumTheir day has come and now gone for the average non mechanical homeowner/ firewood cutter. Shop rates and scarcity of parts keeps most from being repaired and a shiny new Poulan looks much nicer than a beat up ole Homelite or other old all mag saw. I only know of two individuals that own just one Homelite each and they still cut their annual firewood with those saws. One is a XL12 and the other a Super II, I have kept each one running so far.
Compared to some of the monsters they made back then it was a lightweight. We have a couple XL automatics around here as well and they were red white and green. I always remembered snickering as one of them said the lightest chainsaw with an automatic oiler. By today's standards, it was a steamroller. Lack of plastic will do that I guess.
