I tore into dad's husky 55 the other day and found out why it was cutting out when it got hot but would start back when it cooled down.
Noticed compression was low when I pulled on starter cord, took muffler off and it has some scoring but not too bad yet. What do I look into as far as finding out what caused it and what aftermarket piston should I go with? Dad doesn't want to spend much on repairs. Was going to put a new impulse line on it also. Saw didn't seem to surge when idoling either.
Should I go with a hyway piston from weedeater man with a caber ring and oem circlips?
Thanks

Depends on what type of transfer porting your 55 has. Open or closed.

If you have the cylinder off, post a pic of the piston, the exhaust side cylinder wall and the transfer ports.

Most recommend Meteor pistons if they are made for your application. Otherwise, go with whatever weedeaterman recommends.

You should replace the impulse and intake seals just on principle, the impulse seal especially. You can then vac test it to see if the crank seals are good, or just go ahead and replace them too. Inspect/replace the fuel line. Clean the carb and put a kit in it. Make sure the carb mounting bolts aren't stripped into the intake block.

The impulse does not use a line in this saw. It uses a grommet that is known for wearing out on these saws. Very common problem.
Do what Brad mentioned above. Open or closed port, they are good saws. Closed port being better.

All there is is the carb that attaches to the cylinder is a gasket. When I pulled the carb off I didn't notice the grommet for impulse
Will look later

Just get a Meteor piston (provided it's an open port). By the time you buy the Hyway, Caber rings, and OEM clips you have the cost of a Meteor piston, which comes with Caber cilps and good clips.

As mentioned, the likely culprit for the failure is the rubber grommet that sits in the cylinder base and receives the impulse nipple.

Here's a few pics to show the difference between open and closed port.
These are Partner 500/5000 jugs. Basically the same as the Husky 55.
The pencil is pointing to the impulse grommet hole.

The closed port is on the left... open on the right.

The closed port uses a windowed piston, the open port uses a solid piston (no windows).
The pistons are not exact matches to the jugs, I just grabbed the first ones I found. You can see the difference in a windowed and solid.

Here's the location of the impulse grommet.

Howdy,
As a rule, saws that are fluffing because of compression issues when they get hot won't even think about idling. If it was stopping like someone snuck up and turned the switch off, and your run cycles were getting shorter the more you tried to use it, I would have suspected a module.

and all this from a man in sever digital distress at the moment too ! good on you Ed !

Saw is closed port and cylinder has some scoring but not bad
No tears in impulse grommet or intake boot, what do I look for?
The compression was pretty weak and bent. Would that cause anything with the scoring

Somebody will be along to help before long.Pistons for that one are few and far between. If it were me I'd set that cylinder on the shelf for a while and order a New Meteor Cylinder and Piston Kit..

You are going to have a tough time finding a piston for that one.

I installed a meteor cylinder and piston from weedeaterman (site sponsor) on a 55 I did and the results were very good. I put it back together without a base gasket.

Customer was very happy with it.

II would STRONGLY suggest you pressure test and vacuum test with the intake manifold installed so you can test the fit on the impulse line and intake integrity as I found leaks on mine that I went through.
