Stihl 440 whats your opinion?

My favorits saw in the world.....044 10mm...even ahead of an OE 372 which is my second favorite....but the 372 does have better av.

Yes, but it never really was up to the 372xp, that was the main competition.....

you need to take one of my 440's for a spin ,they are not all the same ,with a 461 handlebar ,and a light bar ,it balances like no other i have ever ran ,and yes i have owned 2 372 saws ,definatly a great saw in my opinion ,one was an xpw ,the 372 was smoother i will give you that ,and had excellent chainspeed ,but lacked the lean on tourque my stihls have for work ,the ergos fit me better on the stihl also ,which i am sure is personal preference for most

No saw on this earth has the balance and feel of an 044 10mm....like I say I love OE 372's with their chain speed and smooth av.....but the 10mm 044 has perfect balance...a little more torque and a little balance. Even though an OE 372 balances extremely well.

Waaay better AV and air filtration - but the early 044s are cool, just because they are lighter. The late ones, and the MS440, aren't much lighter though, just slightly.

372's do have better air filtration as well....a lot better. I wish I could afford to have at least 5 044 10mm's and 5 OE 372's...lol. I will say I don't like the 12mm 044/ 440 quite as well and I sure don't like the xtorque as well as a OE 372. The 440 replacement....441? Oh my where do I start to complain? Ported correctly they will kill any 70cc saw....I mean kill them....but my 2100cd handles as well and is 28cc bigger..

Whats everyones opinion on the stihl 440? Its one of the few saws I have never ran...I cut about 50-100+ cords of firewood a year and occasionally drop a few large trees. Hows it compare to the 441? 460?

I run a small firewood bundling business I did buy my wood for about $45.00 a pickup load but this year a pickup load went to $100.00 a load so I am going to cut my own Ash. I sell about 4 semi loads. I have 180 but it gets a little tired. Will that 362 do the job for me. I am 73 and I don't want a saw I can't handle or in 2 hours I'm wore out. Give me some info Thks

I think for what your doing a 260 would be a better choice.Im 40 and saws wear me out any more.If your not keened in on buying Stihl,a Husky 353 is a great little saw for firewood to,and a good bit cheaper

044/440 was THE preferred saw for timber fallers here in the west, bar none. Lighter and thinner than the 460 or 441, and far less vibration than the 460. With a CDN 460 DP muffler cover, the 044/440 has about the same HP as a stock 460. I have owned all three saws, and I ran my 044 the most. I recently traded my 044 for a 441 only for the AV (age, tendonitis and arthritis are catching up to me). I also had a 372xpw and a 576xp to compare them to. I much prefer Stihl, but the 576 was smooth as glass.

The 461 is the resurrected/combination of the 440 and the 460, rubber mounts with the same vibe/handling as the 440, and the power of the 460. I prefer my 361s to any other saws that I have owned (over 100 now). They are my go to saws... I even prefer them to my 036. I run my 441 in bigger stuff, I sold my 066s as I do not fall the big DBH trees any more. I sold my Husky saws with my second Bandit chipper when I got out of the arbor biz a few years ago.

If I could only have one Stihl PRO saw it would be the 044/MS 440 . The next best thing is my 046/440 hybrids the other 45 Stihls all get their turn after these. The 044 was the saw that got me into the world of Stihl and they will see me through til I cannot physically run one.

Yes, it seems like they never all get together all in one shot again, I have added one more since and they get ran the most of all my saws. They are likely a little more worn and could be slightly dirtier than back then but not one of them has needed a part replaced yet/since. The one with the 046 tank was used with a whip mounted to the rear handle base, its used to measure pulpwood up this way and the 046 tank could extend the run time nearly 15 mins between fillups. If a regular tank saw gets filled roughly 8 times a day then we could easily save 2 fillups per day, that meant some extra wood on the ground every day we cut.

Thanks everyone for the replys!! I pulled the trigger today on a brand new 440 to add to the fleet...I ran a 441 a good bit last year and felt that it was a little on the heavy side and just felt like a big saw I have read a few places that they don't hold up as good. I guess I will be pleased with this thing then fitted with a 18-20 and on occasion 25in bar for firewood. I felt as if my 046 and 460 were on the heavy side and just too much saw for most firewood duties. I run a 026 036 361 and 362 also the 61 being my favorite but wanted a little more punch at times when I get into the big logs. I think im going to get the 61 ported.

I finally got to run my "new to me and mint" 10mm 044. All I'm gonna say is HOLY COW!!! Didn't remember my 440 feeling "that good" lol. I was running her hard in some fresh 24" red oak logs.

I would find a nice 361. I just sold my 362 it felt like a underpowered 441. I love the 361 it has power good anti vibe and its light.....compared to my 036's I have a pro and regular I like them a lot (more than the 362) but they do vibrate more the 61 is just a really smooth nice running saw.

I actually just got an 044 and I LOVE IT. How do I tell if it is a 10 or 12mm? I also picked up another used 440 but have yet to run it.

for the people doubting that i own any of these saws

i have just been too busy working 10-14 hour days i did just under100 but over 90 face cords in the past 10 days yesterday the windchill was -18 ans tge splitters wouldnt run i was busting out dump loads little over full cord with a mull in under an hour each
