MS461 air filter not sealing. How much damage has this done? I have already started to clean the venturi in the carb, it was covered in dust and much filthier than what I have taken. This is after 5 tanks of fuel this morning. Should I take it back to the dealer and get them to check ii out? I am not happy about this!

Try some grease between the seal area and the hole for filter screw.

Have had in the past were the solder of the filter screw bottoms out without propery sealing the filter.i have used foam tape to pack out filter housing (stuck to under side of filter housing) to take up the gap.

+1 on using some grease to help it seal.... If I'm not pushed for time I'll remove the filter and give it a quick tap on something every time I top up with fuel.
If the filter is full of dust the saw is going to suck air and crap from anywhere it can (past the seals).

The very fine dust from cutting dry Grey or Yellow box is enough to test any filter, my 084 will suck a little of this dry dust every tank, even with grease!

ps: Close the choke when your cleaning around the carb....It helps keep the chit out.

I use Ballard's waterproof grease (the green stuff and as if grease isn't waterproof lol) but I used the last of it on my bike on the weekend.

I can't believe how crap a design Stihl have come up with here. No wonder they massively improved on it with the MS661....

I feel like taking the saw back as this is clearly a flaw in design and some may argue not fit for purpose.....

I'm still passed off.

just killed the 2nd OEM coil on my ms261 :-(

gotta say the stihl coils must definately have an issue, either that or iam the unluckiest stihl user around.

fortinately i had a chinese copy in the gear bag to get me out of trouble,
thinking i will stick with the 20 buck specials for now.

They did have any issue with them. If it has clear epoxy potting/filler in it not black there's every chance it's an effected one. Send me your SN and I can check it

I have dusted an engine I built 27 years ago. It was a BDA and I put it in an RS200 MkI Escort. Minor dusting destroyed the rings, enough damage to pistons to need replacement and took the hone off the bore, in effect glazing the bore....so the engine needed a full rebuild pistons upwards. Head was okay just re bed the valves back in.

What has happened to my saw looks worse than a minor dusting and certainly enough to root a motor I reckon.

The original had the clear epoxy however the one I replaced it with that failed yesterday had the black epoxy. Exactly the same symptoms. Given the saw was sent over from the U.S. And is warranted by myself I just binned the original. The second is in the garage still. It came from the U.S. As well. ($50 versus $160)

Can confirm. I've achieved similar with, 345, 346, 445, 268 and 562.
Perhaps not as bad, but I've had filthy inlets on them all. I'm very cautious with the 562 and have avoided it getting bad.

Going to do a fluid change on my splitter. It's a chinga 40t like Matt uno's. In the manual it list either iso32, dex2or3 and 10w motor oil as all being suitable and working for a car dealer I can get 10w30 or 15w40 and as much as I need at a good price, any one see any problem with this being a functional it doesn't really have to be anything that special.

It's very strange that you had an issue with the later black one then. The problem they had was the clear potting cooled at a different rate the the components and cause something to crack off the board inside. The black stuff cools at a similar rate so it contracts at the same rate

you could use some kind of high temp silicone to make a gasket for the filter to seal on cleen well it so it will stick and place an even beed where the filter seats let silicon dry then pop it back togeter

Mate, I have worked with electrical components for over 20 years so nothing surprises me with regard to electrical failure. A bloke I work with had the coil on his 441 m-tronic die on his second outing. He was pretty pissed. He sourced his locally and the dealer initially tried charging him for a replacement coil. Needless to say he had a few choice words to offer the dealer who thought it then prudent in the end to cover the cost.

Caterpillar lists 15w40 as hydaulic oil for some of their equipment. I use it without issue.

Thanks everyone for the very helpful suggestions regarding the crap air filtration on the 461.....I won't be using it without grease again.....might even try a thin bead of silicon/polyurethane (I will ensure it is compatible first) as suggested.

I will be checking it every tank from now on.
