Will Any Of The New Saws Ever Gain Legendary Status???

To answer the ORIGINAL post - Nope... the EPA will make sure they will have a much shorter product life than the old iron... Hard to be legendary with a 5 year model life (max) - and any brand...

That's right Andy. We'll all have a bunch of new models to love/hate in 2011.
 
200T, 026/260, 044/440, 371/372 all gone, or soon to be gone but not forgotten. As far as the newer saws out there, even for all their advancement in technology, I don't think they'll be in production long enough for "legendary" status. Legendary to me means long production run, coveted by sawyers for their performance and durable reputation, the kind of saw that you borrow or use and just have to get one. No matter what............

The Dolmies while nice looking, sounds from the internet that they are marvelous saws, I have yet to see one run or in person for that matter. Maybe the "legendary" saw no one actually ran??:spam: I'd like to see them break out of this cult following and get into the main stream, I think the competition is good for the top two players in the field.
 
You know maybe "legendary" means sales numbers and not necessarily performance. Look at the Ford Mustang - - in '65-66 sold over a million and a half cars. Not necessarily the best performer but definitely acheived "legend" status. They created a whole class of cars - - Pony cars.

So maybe its the Stihl 290 and Husky 455 Rancher - - those wonderful plastic bodied things that outsell every other saw in their respective lines. Maybe they'll be the true legends!?! :cheers:

Are the '65-'66 Stangs legends or were they the teaser that launched the legendary Mustang line that followed? Certainly not all Mustangs are legends...... anyone recall those enemic POS's in the mid '70s? You know, the one's they started putting 4 cylinders in..... Like taking an 660 and putting a 290 powerplant in.:mad: :censored:
 
I think the Mustangs are a legend "as a whole" and that was my point. Due to their high sales numbers even through today is what helped them reach legend status.

I think the "Farm Boss" and "Rancher" might be capable of the same type of thing in the chainsaw world - just on shear numbers.

BTW the 74-76 POS Mustangs out sold every other year other than 65 -66 beacause they offered what the public wanted at the time. Good fuel economy and smaller and again fun to drive. Not screaming performance by any stretch of the imagination, but fun to drive for those who bought them. Plus they kept the Mustang name going which probably helped the "Legend" thing.

That's probably why Husky has had a few versions of the Rancher over a period of time now as well - - the name sells! :)

The thread "Witch saw models should be brought back? got me thinking about the new saws Stihl MS361, MS441 etc.

Will any of these saws ever gain THE LEGENDARY STATUS that saws like the Stihl 028, 038 & Husky 262, 266 have???

OK, here are my votes:

Stihl MS260 - Getting somewhat dated but a wonderful saw
Husky 372XP - The market won't except it's death
Dolmar DCS401, PS5100, PS7900 - Users love the products inspite of Dolmar's "cluster ?????" marketing/distribution network.
Stihl 066/MS660 - The top dog (almost)
 
Just trying to site a parallel example on how a couple of "consumer saws" might acheive legendary status. But that might be hard to accept on the this site.

I vote for the Poulan "Wild Thing" - it is a legend in its own right......:givebeer: :monkey:

Yah know, it is, actually. I mean, take any saw that is not working right, and it gets called a '%$$#@ing Wild Thang.' :greenchainsaw:

And like the AMC Gremlin, it looks ugly, but stands out and screams at you.

Mustangs were originally designed as a chick car and to be economical. They didn't become legendary till people realized that you could put a huge motor is a small light car and make it hall balls that it became legendary. The nova was also one of those cars.

I would say most things that people consider legendary became that way people started making them what they wanted out of them. Usually what they became good for was never there original intent.
