One of my friends just took up making maple syrup. He's having a field day with just a dozen or so trees in his back yard tapped. I'm not sure what amount he's up to, but he said he has a few quarts to drop off for me already. We're getting reasonable temps during the day, and still keeping near freezing over night. I assume from what you've mentioned, thays what keeps them producing well?
Yes, that's what keeps them producing well. Actually, slightly below freezing is the best. Somewhere in the mid-upper 20s range. And daytime highs in the 40s.
Maple syrup production around me has been terrible this year for that reason. It was to cold at the beginning of January. Then later in the month it looked like we might some ideal weather for it, but no. It was still either to warm or to cold.
February came and we had three weeks straight where it didn't even get above freezing and the lows were below zero.
Now that it's warmed up, it's been the warm. We've had highs in 50s and 60s and lows in upper 30s to middle 40s.

Yes , the trees are running today

I thought i was cutting cherry. But the sapwood and heartwood color is reversed. What is it

Here are some photos of some wild black cherry I cut up today. This tree fell during Helene in September, and sometime in October I cut it up into rough "log" sections for later processing. Today I finally took some time to chunk it into firewood-sized sections. I was surprised that there was still enough sap to have the same color reaction you're seeing. Usually I see this only on live trees, but I guess maybe since the leaves were still on it when it fell, these sections were big enough to still be holding sap (?).

In the photo below, the cut showing the rotten center is an old, weathered cut from October, for comparison. The other cuts are fresh this morning.

Hope this helps. Safe cutting!

Well, now I have a conundrum. Stopped at my dealer to get parts for the CS400 I'm fixing up with my oldest son.

I made a comment that he should throw in the new 462 sitting there. He said he'd make me a helluva deal. I asked him how good. He looks on the computer and says, "How about $800 out the door PHO?"

I had to leave quickly because CAD kicked in hard. After thinking about it I think I should buy it, sell the MS460 and have the 462 ported.

What say you?

That’s a very good deal to pass up, I’d say yes ,

I would keep the 460 as a good, strong back up saw to the 462.

It's only money, go to work and make more. A good saw keeps your family warm way better than 8 pieces of paper.

I dare you to tell my wife(CPA, CMA, CFM) that. Plus I'm of german descent and live in WI. Lots of us still haven't spent our baptism money!

Buy it, sell the rest of that ****.

Keep both saws, do muffler mods on both, and you will have 2 good running saws that are stronger than stock!

Just make sure the 462 is M-Tronic and you remove the carb limiters on the 460 and set the Hi about 1 1/8 out.

Always good to have a second saw so you can keep going if your chain gets dull.

An 8 pointer, 4 pointer and a button buck are standing by a field browsing on acorns.
The 8 pointer says,
'I'm happy with my 10 does, we're really getting along.'
The 4 pointer says,
'I'm happy as heck with my 5, they really take care of me!'
The Button buck says,
'My two are all right, better than nothing I guess.'
Then all of a sudden a GIANT 14 pointer walks out into the field.
The three bucks had never seen anything like him before, they were in awe.
The big buck made a huge scrape and pissed in it, rubbed a tree the size of a telephone pole and snapped it off at the ground!
The three bucks looked on in amazement.
The 8 pointer says,
'I could probably get by with 4 does...........
Who really needs 10 anyway?'
The 4 pointer says,
'You know.............. come to think of it, I only really use one or two of mine!'
The button buck was silent, as the other two bucks look over to him in confusion.
Suddenly the Button buck runs out into the middle of the field!
He rips and tears up some grass........
pisses all over the place,
snorts & wheezes,
rubs his head raw on a tree,
and chews a lickin branch clean off!
Then he runs back over to his buddies.
His friends immediately ask him,
'What the heck are you doing!?'
I'm just makin' sure that big son of a gun knows I'm a buck!'5306466645282567074.jpeg
