Hi my first post here.I live in the UK and was wondering what would be a good chainsaw that i can afford to start with. The people i'm doing my apprentice ship with have alot of experence in this area and i have taken there advice.I'm posting to get a wider views on the items at hand.

First off whats your thoughts on Poulan chainsaws? My boss and work m8 had one for a while and said it was a good saw whats your thoughts?

Also whats your thought on Sachs Dolmar saws? They had a couple where i work.My boss says they were good.My work m8 said the small dolmars are good but the big ones are rubbish.Whats your thoughts?

Also did Pioneer ever make chainsaws with green casings like Poulan? You see my boss said he had a chainsaw that was green and thinks it was made in Canada but couldn't remember the name. Then today i asked my work m8 he said he think it was called pioneer and the green chainsaw was good.Hence i came home and punched pioneer into a search but couldn't find a green one but found Poulan and thats why i'm asking.

My first thought is that you should work on your grammar, punctuation, and style. Following your thought (singular, not plural) through this post is tiring and frustrating, since every sentence is replete with errors and contains 3 times as many words as it should.

You said "whats your thoughts" (should be "what are your thoughts") 4 times in 5 sentences, and your use of "work m8" for workmate is downright obnoxious. Take some time on your next post and try to communicate in at least a quasi-intelligble manner and you'll enjoy more agreeable responses.

Wow, that was a great way to welcome a new poster to the forum.
Shall we expect you to now be correcting all grammar mistakes on this site?
It will surely make for interesting reading, and here I thought I would only be able to learn about chainsaw related topics.
It is fabulous that we have such an indispensable service available to us. Keep up the good work. I look forward to your corrective posts.

I'm glad to be of service. :) And no, I don't correct all grammar mistakes. In fact, grammar was low on the list of problems with this post. If you notice, I never say anything to Tony Marks about grammar because he's got an interesting style. Regardless, I'm off to work. :)

Yes and his post was off topic(spam) and not helpful, and rude.He also forgets that i live in the UK which in the UK we spell words differently.Yeah sorry about the text(m8 instead of mate) speak which is used in the UK on mobile phones.I don't usually do that. Also when i typed my original post i was in a hurry.

I have a complaint aswell this is suppose to be a Discussion forums for forestry and aborists, not an english exam or english forums. If you want proper grammer, spelling and punctuation and want to speak about it.Go to an english litrature forums and correct people there.

I highlight discussion again.Discussion is talking between you and another person or group. Now when people discuss subjects they don't speak proper English all the time.Infact most people have an accent. Its how they sound and speak and most accents arn't proper English. For instance i come from Dorset on the south coast of England. In a Dorset accent you don't pronounce the R in words.

Dolmar vs. Poulan

If the choice is between Dolmar and Poulan, I would have to lean slightly toward the Dolmar. :D

Thanks for the advice.Have you heard of Shindaiwa chainsaws? The model i'm interested in is the 577.

I would lean heavily away, in any direction, from current Poulan products if you plan to use them on a professional basis.

Dave, not only is it nice to actually use the words instead of phonetic substitutes, but separating your sentences with a blank space would be beneficial too. This isn't a mobile phone-based forum. We have the luxury of time and a real keyboard. Let's make it as easy as possible for each other, okay? Making it easy for yourself at the outset transfers the difficulty to everyone else who might like to join in.

Pioneer did indeed use the same (or similar) green color as Poulan is using. I don't believe Pioneer, as such, is yet in the business. It's my understanding Electrolux picked them up and merged them with Poulan some time ago.

Also Dolmar has been out from "under" Sachs for some time now, too. They've jumped beds over to Makita now. They evidently do make a high-quality product.

What is the nature of your intended use for the saw?

I'm aware of and didn't forget the variation in spelling separating our countries.

Your post here is a vast improvement: concise, coherent, and non-redundant.

My experience with Sachs-Dolmar is limited to a 112 silver, a 120 super, and a 133 (should have had a compression release). All were excellent saws. I have not found the bigger ones to be any lower quality than the smaller ones.

Poulan makes some commercial grade saws, but their biggest market appears to be the disposable, homeowner-type customer. The money spent on one of their pro saws will go a long way toward a Stihl, Husky, or Dolmar, and all of these have much more desirable reputations.

I've never used a Shindawa.

The only mobile phone text speak was M8 instead of mate. All the rest is plain English. The saw would be for professional use Glen. For logging mostly and cutting down trees. After i finish my Forestry apprenticeship i plan on getting a better job which would involve more tree felling. I was really looking for a saw in the 50-60cc range. Can be alittle over 60cc give or take a few cc's.

Thanks for the reply Space Mule. Greatly appreciated. Have you ever used a Jonsered chainsaw?

What i'm trying to achieve with this thread is a wide view of the different chainsaw manufacturers. The reason being that the saw i buy in the end will probably be second hand. The manufacturers i have mentioned are some i have found on the UK Ebay.

Jonsered is (lately) Husky, but with different covers/colors.

I can wholeheartedly suggest for a one-saw stable, the Stihl 036 (later MS360). They have been replaced by the MS361 which does indeed appear to be a better product, but you'll likely not find one used yet. The 036 is 62cc and is extremely happy with a 20" bar day in day out.

Welcome.
If you are going to use a saw to bring in cash, i would consider a pro saw, with near competent service/dealer.
Pick a brand that is highly represented and go there and look at some models, talk to the dealer and see what he thinks.
There is a lot to gain by having a good dealer. Believe it or not it could actually save you some money.

Thanks for the advice guys keep it coming. I like the look of Jonsered chainsaws and Makitas. I just checked the Jonsered UK website. Theres 5 dealers in my area for Jonsereds. I can't find the Makita website with chainsaws on?

Welcome Dave, I don't use saws as much as some of these guys do, but I have to agree with Glens, if you're only going to have one saw for now, the 036 can't be beat. I have an 034S (62cc) and an MS361 (59cc) and both are workhorses with 20" bars. They are small and light enough to haul around all day topping and limbing, but powerful enough to fell an 18" oak tree if you don't have a bigger saw handy. 034's and 036's can be had online, lots out there. Yes for pro use you need good dealer support with lots of parts floating in the pipelines.

Dave

If you're looking at a pro saw, I'll echo what's been said about the Stihl 036/360/now 361. For the size range you're looking for, that'd be a good choice. And also like what has been said, a good dealer is priceless. Lowe's and Wal Mart don't count....but you probably don't have those over there do you?

Take care all,
Jeff

Dave,
You mentioned that there are 5 Jonsered dealers in your area. Are there any other dealers in your area? What brands or dealers do the local tree guys use? If I were you I would ask one of them for advice.
