Thanks so much in advance for your time - I really appreciate it!

I'm a newbie to the site (awesome resource by the way!), and happened to stumble onto it while looking for a points gap setting tool - for my 032.

I love the old 031's and 032's, and buy and fix them up when I'm able to. Recently, I purchased an 032 that was in need of points adjstment (I'm assuming, as all the parts spec'd out according to the service manual). The flywheel, however, didn't have the adjustment windows in it, so I need to get a hold of the points "cam" tool, to allow me to set the gap correctly. (Either that, or I guess I could buy a junk 032 flywheel and turn it down in a lathe and make my own tool...) At the same time, I'd like to buy some new ignition parts to have on hand.

So, my questions are:

1) Where does a guy buy igntion parts for 031's and 32's (other than ebay)?
2) Are tools available for sale anywhere (points gap tool, flywheel puller, etc.)?

Thanks so very much for your time,
Tom

I have an 032 electronic. It was with a pile of parts saws bought from a tree trimmer. The factory module was bad and the saw would run good for about 10 minutes and die when I first revived it .I traded a freind and got a good ignition with points, condenser and coil and installed it. I tried guessing the timing and points setting about 7 or8 times and came close but the saw would get to hot. I then bought an aftermarket module off ebay and installed it in place off the points and it solved the problem presto.($17)
I used the saw on and off this summer until recently it took a fit. I worked
on the carb and got some notable improvment but it still isn't fixed good enough. I am looking for a carb I know is good to confirm my belief the carb is bad. I might have one but I forgot where I put it as it isn't with all my other 032 parts. This saw could be for sale as well as the points , condenser, and coil and several other good 032 parts I have. If you don't come up with a solution in a day or 2 and could be interested pm me and I would price any or all.

New parts are NLA but you can sometimes find someone with old stock.

When I get good used 031 igns. they usually sell out within 48hrs so that tells ya that these saws have some ignition problems.

To set the points you can get a nice set of feeler gauges, the kind that come on a ring.

Flywheel puller is widely available.

Almost all the parts are still available new (points, condensor etc). I replace them often.

The 032 does convert easily to electronic in a few minutes. Don't even bother pulling the flywheel if you do.

Yes, a used flywheel cut down does make a good points setting tool - It's what I use.

Nope - you're right about the coil... We find so few that are ever blown (always suspected, but rarely true) I overlook this. Plenty of used coils around though.

Thanks, guys, for the comments. In response to some of them:

retoocs555: The problem is getting at the points with the flywheel in place - you can't. There's no access holes in the flywheel to be able to set the points. You have to pull the flyweel and "simulate" the lobe found on the flywheel to correctly time/set the points. That's why I need either the correct cam tool or a junk flywheel I can turn down in the lathe. I made a flywheel puller this morning out of stainless, so that's done. Out of curiousity, where does a guy buy them? What are some of the places that sell tools like that?

Lakeside53: Where are the parts available new? Could you site me some locations/stores, etc? I'd certainly consider switching to electronic, if you have any good references as to what is needed and how to correctly do it.

As for the coil - the primary side is measuring in at 1.14 ohms (.7-1.0 is spec'd in the manual). Is this too high for correct function?

Thanks again, guys - I REALLY APPRECIATE IT!

Any Stihl dealer can sell your the points, condenser etc. The conversion kit to electronic is either a Stihl module or an Atom. You have to mess around an make a mounting bracket for the Atom.

You coil is likely o.k....

Thanks again for the info, Lakeside53. I'm curious about one thing that I originally overlooked in your first reponse:

"The 032 does convert easily to electronic in a few minutes. Don't even bother pulling the flywheel if you do."

I might be missing something (forgive the inexperience if I am), but how do you remove the points and install the trigger plate for the electronic ignition without pulling the flywheel? When you talk about the Stihl Module - that is, in esence, the trigger plate you're talking about, correct? If not, let me know.

If my assumption is correct, and you're talking about the trigger plate (or module), can a person use the coil and flywheel from the points setup? ...or is there a different coil and flywheel I need to purchase to utilize the trigger plate?

One last thing I forgot to ask... Do the 031 and 032 w/points utilize the same cam tool to correctly set the points? If so, I'm guessing that I should be able to cut down either an 031 or 032 flywheel in the lathe and use it to set the points gap on either model.

Thanks again, guys!
Tom

If it's a points based model, you can just leave the points in there if you are converting to electronic. Just snip of the wires that go under the cover into the stator plate, and mount the trigger unit on a threaded hole near the bottom of the recoil of old coil. Yes, the points coil is fine for conversion.

If you have the flywheel off, you can rip out the old points and just mount a trigger module on the old plate. In some ways it''s preferable as you have a lot more room with which to work. The 032 flywheel does not need to to be retimed for the conversion.

Not sure if the 31 and 32 are the same for the points setting... I'm working from home and don't have the tools in front of me.. I'll check to tomorrow.
