We had a thornless locust down at my old house. It was a nice tree and those little leaves were really easy to clean up.
I should check the nurseries around here and see what they have. Wish I could do fruit trees but the bears would take care of those.

Silver maple produces the larger helicopters that grow easily. Red and Sugar maple produce smaller helis that are much harder to propigate. But they don't grow as fast as the Silver Maple.
Ash is pretty good, but the borer is cleaning those out. However the Mountain Ash is not a target for those guys, and is not a bad tree. But not a fast grower.
Tulip poplar is a good one. Ginko is another.

Fermented mountain ash berries makes for drunk birds, another positive for entertainment!

"The Alaska Life" on facebook shared a video of a drunken bull moose after eating fermented berries. He was stuck between a fence and a building and was more or less passed out against the wall of the building.

I will second the Tulip Poplar and Ash. Tulip Poplar have big leaves that will need to be racked or mulched, but grow much faster than Ash. My red maples drop piles of dead limbs every time we get a little wind.

Hackberry
The 5’ Honey Locust we planted 8-9 years ago is probably 20-25’ high and 20’ across. Highly recommend for a yard tree. Not sure on the expected lifespan.

I have always liked the Japanese maple and the hinoki cypress. Great trees that do not get too large to manage. For bush or shrubs filberts or elderberries are very nice to have around the yard.

Funny this thread popped up. I'm planning on adding some trees to the back yard and Catalpa is very much in the running. I'm not looking for 'clean' however. They are excellent shade trees, get biiiiggg around here.
I do love the looks of catalpa despite the need to pick up the beans
I would also plant a Red Maple.
They don't get too big and are one of the most beautiful trees come Fall.
Second would be Sugar Maple.
Just make sure it's well away from any buried lines or foundations and you'll be good.

Indigenous sugar maples are very rare in my neck of the woods but I do know of a stand about a mile away. Should see if there are any saplings I could transplant.
