today i melted the bottom of my saw out. i think one of the muffler screws fell out. the saws alot louder and i hear some thing rattleing inside it. it still runs fine. i was too tired to start taking it apart tonite so it will wait til the morning. any tips on what to look for? has any one seen this before?

not necessarily on an 020T, but I'd figure out why the screw came out. Minimum would be a new exhaust gasket and some loc-tite for the screws. That might fix it. Look for cracked/broken mounting flanges on the muffler or stripped out holes in the case.

Its a little tricky, If you can just take out the 2 screws out at bottom of saw , Replace them with the NEW STIHL washers & gasket. If the little screws around the muffler are broke Go ahead a buy a new one.Its a tight squese to get it out if you take the 2 screws out up front of tank housing it will make the job a little bit easyier.

well i have a parts saw now. i pulled the pull cord cover off and the the muffler is cracked. i don't do my own saw repairs unless its quick simple stuff. by me the stihl dealers are too pricey for repairs. if the repair will be half the price of the saw i'll just buy a new one. i got 2 years out of it so i feel i got my money's worth, time to retire it.

Could you just pick up a muffler? I know every tree guy around here has plenty of 'parts' 020T's. Mufflers usually don't go bad, so a used one should be easy to find.

i could ask around some guys i know to see if they have a parts saw. but the last time i ordered a muffler for a 288 it was around 60 bucks. plus theres that little pin on the chain side that come out now and then when you change the chain. well i guess i was in a hurry one day and didn't realize it fell into the saw. as i was running it i heard chunch chunch chunch it fell through to the other side and broke most of the fins off the fly wheel. i will try and seek a parts saw though. thanks.
