anyone that could help would be greatly appreciated. A friend of mine has an 024 that will not kill with the switch. Both of us do a good deal of work on various saws when we have to, but neither of us has ever had to deal with this problem before. As of now, the only way to kill it is to choke it, or let it run out of fuel, any suggestions before we take it all apart?

The "kill" is just the shorting on the coil ground wire to the chassis. On the left side at the back (remove your air cleaner for better view) there is a spring contact that just grounds the coil when the throttle rod is moved to the off position. Usually the spring is out of adjustment or the wire has broken off at the contacts. Sometimes it's just dirt...

Best thing to do with the spring is chuck it - they don't adjust well and there is a MUCH better revised version available from your Stihl dealer. DON'T operate the throttle rod to the choke position with the air cleaner off or you will bend the spring - the air cleaner actually limits the spring vertical movement and allows it to operate correctly. Most bad springs are due to being bent without the cleaner...

thanks for the hints and notes. This is a second hand saw that my friends grandfather had, and maybe the spring was broken when he got it. I'll take a look and see whats up. thanks.

Thanks for the info guys. I had a quick look at the saw and found the spring is missing, and at least one of the two wires is broken. I didn't have my meter handy, but connecting to two wires doesn't work either. I'm pretty sure I can get it from here though, thanks again.
