well,I was hoping to get through this without posting a questiion but I got the 24 stripped down and have found scoring on the exhaust side of the piston,I think the cylinder will survive, though. The rings were stuck in the grooves and broke when I attempted to remove them, so now there's a 2 inch piece of each left. Also the crankcase is full of carbon and crap, this saw was run without a proper air filter. So can I clean the crankcase without splitting it apart? If not, How do you get the crank bearings off, heat the case halves? And Best way to get these rings out? I'd like to try to save the piston,or should I just replace it?By the way I've been lurking here a long while and have learned a lot,but not quite enough!

If the piston is scored pretty bad, and the rings are broken..Id START with a new piston and ring set, and take a good look at the jug.

It might clean up with a good honing...

Lots of Stihl Guys here though...

You really can't clean the crankcase out without splitting, but if the crank is in decent shape, and the mains are smooth, just wipe out what you can with a cotton bud and use it. The case will clean up over time once you fix the piston/carb issues. Sounds like you'll need a new piston/rings. As for splitting cases, you should first get an 024/26 service manual - it's all explained there.

Also... read this thread. Different saw, same process.

Thanks red and lakeside, yes I'll get a piston and rings if I dont destroy the saw trying this. Lake that thread was great, I'll study it and maybe have a go at her with the redneck pullers.I paid 25 bucks for the saw and was hoping not to have to get inside the case but there's just too much grit and i'm pretty sure the left side main is hooped, being open like that.oh well, way more work than I anticipated but there's only one way to learn.if this works out a guy gave me a 38 magnum that started once and i'll tie into that next.By the way I'm a rookie chainsaw carver and I figure I better learn a little about saws other than how to fry them:laugh:
