I need a new bar/chain so is this a good time to change chain type and
get away from the thick rail .325/.63 chain?. I want to run a 20" bar, so I
can't use real big chain, and can alway's go to skip tooth. Plenty of
power with the 18" bar. Should I get a .50 bar or ?

What's different about the 026 bar mount? Can they be modified to fit?

I probably wouldn't go bigger then 18" on an 025, but you guys out west seem to be able to run pretty big bars on saws. The bar stud slot on an 026 bar does not go all the way back like the 025 does. I've never tried to modify one, so I couldn't tell you if it could be done. One thing you will need to make sure is that the oil holes line up if you do try doing that.

According to stihl's chart you would be looking for a 3005-000-4717 18" bar along with a 68DL chain. An 18" 026 bar has 74DL vs the 68DL that is on your recommended bar.
