Hi, Folks! Just a quickie thread here.....thanks to all who gave advice on this little 025, which was scavenged from the junk pile. Now, not only is it near mint, it runs beautifully! It was built for the wife, who hasn't seen it yet.. I told her about it on the phone, and I think I heard her rolling her eyes. I'm certain that I heard her smiling too, though!

Again, thanks!

Right awn! Can't ever have too many saws...and ones that you build yourself, or rescue from the claws of others, are that much better! Looks like a pretty clean machine! She ought to like it!

The 044 is next, Andy!! Remember the one I posted where the previous owner used threaded bolts as a piston stop (see pics)? I've got a clean used jug and new piston waiting for it. I also had a parts saw that had much nicer covers and a pretty clean gas tank. I think it'll be a decent looking, good running saw. I MIGHT even have enough ugly parts left over to do most of a second (also ugly) 044. :hmm3grin2orange: This would require me to clean up the damage to the "knucklehead" jug. Unfortunately, the piston is toasted.. the rings are pinched. Searchwords = mod, port, dremel, timing, woods. I haven't delved into it yet, but I think you guys LOWER the ports, not raise 'em. In that case, I'll just try to clean it up to a minimal damage footprint.

If I can pull off the second 044, I'll sell the nice one.....nice stuff is totally wasted on me. Just ask my truck!!

If you're just trying to get the saw running, I'd take a small flat file and open that ring groove back up. IMHO, that jug is in worse shape than the piston. Clean them up and you might be surprised how it runs. Wouldn't cost anything but a gasket and set of rings to try.

Yeah, maybe I will try to clean that piston up, them OEM pistons are pricey and it looks like I just need to widen the ring groove a touch and knock the corners of those dents off. That's going to have to be one thin-*ss file for that ring groove, though. And you're right, the jug is iffy, but I think I've got nothing to lose by trying (or am I kidding myself?) What concerns me most is just exactly how that nickasil is adhered.

The 298 that is on my projects list came in with a jug in which the nickasil was basically "peeled" away under one of the transfers, almost like there had been corrosion BEHIND the nickasil. It had come away in a big sheet and torched the bearings. Maybe I should post a pic.... I figure if thats the case on this 044 jug, I'd be better off using it for yard art. Based on how I'm reading you fellas port these jugs, I'm guessing the 298 is an aberration. Wow, full circle there! I guess I'll go for it.

Rope works much better than bolts I see. Don't you wonder what some people think when they do things like that? :buttkick: I guess they think it is a good idea, HAHA.
