Greetings all,

I need to replace the cylinder/piston. Any tips? Never done anything so small. :)

What exactly must I take off (plastic, etc) to get at the cylinder bolts? This is where I am stuck at. What tool must I use to get them off? A socket aint gonna fit.

You will need to take off the top shroud, disconnect the rubber intake manifold from the rear of the cylinder, and remove the muffler at a minimum. I take the carb off to make putting the intake manifold back on easier, and not tearing it (they are getting expensive $27 bucks for an 026 earlier this week).

You will need a Torx 27 long wrench. There are 4 holes that go through the cylinder down to the screws. You can buy them from Bailey's as WIHA brand, or probably your local dealer/tool shop.

Make sure when you put the circlips back onto the piston that the circlip opening points either up or down. The arrow on the top of the piston points toward the muffler. Do not twist the cylinder on the piston to get it on. Use a tie strap or piston wring compressor to get the cylinder over the piston rings. If you have to put the rings on the piston, make sure you put them on correctly, so the indents on the rings match the pin in the piston groove.

Pretty quick and easy to do.

first, take off the top cover (flat screwdriver, one screw on the top in a rubber grommet) pull the spark plug.

get yourself a long T27 torx bit (this link)

the T27 bit will remove your muffler bolts (2 on the cover, 2 under cover)
and your 4 cylinder base bolts.

a small flat screwdriver will deal with the intake boot.

the baileys instructions for cylinder removal and replacement mostly apply, other than the top cover. this is 8mb

I went to looking and found the holes in the head...where you can get the bolts out. Couldnt see the forest for the trees...or however that goes.

Local store...no such thing. I will order one and go from there. Surely I'll be back with questions. :)

I swear I took everything else off with a T-25?

Thanks for the help.

Ok, doesnt matter, I have neither. :)

I'll have to order one online.

How do you know that the cylinder needs replacing? Often, they are OK. if you can take sharp close up pics here, that would help folks like Lakeside to give you an idea if the cyl is salvageable or not...

The piston blew a skirt, from what I can see.

$65 for a cylinder kit, might as well do it all.

I'll take pics once I manage to find a Torx wrench.

Yep, the skirt has a chuck out of it.

When I put it together, the rod clips point up, or does it matter? Arrow goes to the exhaust port, right? Rings go against the pins, 180 opposite of each other?

Anything else I need to know? Getting the rings in the jug might be interesting.

The clips are supposed to "point up" but I see many saws not like that and they never seem to break or come out.

Just take a plastic tie wrap or a strip cut out of a beer can to compress the rings.
