Is there a data base that would tell you by serial # what year your saw was produced? Might be handy for replacement parts and accessories! Sorry if this is an often asked "Newbie" question!!

There are a couple of threads here that

address your question. In a nutshell: IF (note the if) Stihl uses some kind of date coding in their serials numbers, nobody here has figured it out, or revealed it. There are some official Stihl dealers & technicians here that can offer a clearer & more detailed explanantion. Chris J.

Gene, The saw you have coming to you is an "early" 026. The biggest difference is the clutch drum. Your saw will arrive with a rim sprocket so you won't need to replace the clutch drum for a VERY long time. The only drawback is that it is a genuine Stihl clutch drum on the saw so you can only use Stihl brand small hub rims, not the end of the world either. Also on the "early" models the identification plate is made of aluminum not plastic.

Thanks Paul & Rich,
I bought a John Deere 318 L&G tractor from "The Weekend Freedom Machines" website. Tractor was an '83 which was registered in their database by serial #. It is a great way to hunt for specific parts as well as acting as a pretty good theft deterant! Those guys are as into their tractors as the folks here are into saws!

Gene, when are you planning on starting the thinning? Will you be working by yourself? Later, Roger.
