I just got an 028WB in and everything seems to be fine on the saw, the only problem I have is I can't seem to get the air cover to come off of the saw. It's the older style with the screw not the twist lock, when I back the screw out (looks more like a nut) I'm guessing that it threads onto a bolt coming out of the carb but not sure. I think that whatever it connects to is backing out with it but will not come all the way out to let the cover come off, Has anyone had this problem with the older style and is there a trick to get it off? The saw seems to have good compression I can pick it up by the start cord and it slowly will go down but it has to fight the compression to do so, the sprocket and bar are hammered but I'm wanting to put a rim spocket on it anyway, local dealer said I had to have a conversion for it, says the bar cover has to be replaced in order to use a rim sprocket the package (cover, spocket, rim and so on) will be $56.

First time I've ever heard some nonsense about needing a new bar cover to use a rim/drum system. Possibly if had a chainbrake built into the cover there might be some clearance issues (like an 045/056 swap), but the 028 has an inboard clutch which makes that a moot point.

If anybody will know, it'll be stihltech. Personally, I'd get just the rim/drum and decide for myself if the cover is an issue.

Not sure about the air filter thing. Don't have an 028...yet. Got a Super coming very, very soon.

That air filter cover screw threads into one of the air filter retainer screws. The air filter retainer screw has flange on it so that if it comes it doesn't fall out. If you pull straight out on the cover the flange should let loose from the air filter. Worse case, you break the outside half of the air filter. The other option is to grind the flange off the air filter cover screw untill it can slide through the hole in the cover. I haven't heard of the problem with the clutch cover when you switch to the rim & drum style. We sell the Oregon brand rim & drum system on the 028 for $12.95 + $5.95 shipping. It comes with a new oil pump drive and the other hardware for installing it.

The Stihl setup comes with the new OIL PUMP cover(around the clutch drum), dive gear and sprocket. I have not tried an Oregon setup. The thing to look for is interference between any of the rotating parts and the cover.

Thanks for all of the replies and information, I WILL be buying one of the rim sprockets and stuff from you next week ( I will PM you so I can get the info to send the money to you) as far as the cover goes I was afraid to pull to hard out of fear I would damage something so I guess its go for it and see how it turns out. If I break the filter I will just order a new one that wouldn't bother me, getting in there and being able to clean the filter is more important.

OK got the cover to come off, it was one of the studs that holds the carb mounted but it had backed out of the threads it was in, he had cross threaded the cover nut onto the stud i was able to get it out also after the cover came off, I traded the studs to give the one with the better threads to the cover the cover nut is about half stripped out but it is holding, hope I can find another one (this one is working fine but would like one that is the way it should be). Thanks for the tips, I was a bit nervous when pulling that hard then I seen I was able to pull some and get a screw driver in to help split the air filter in half after that it came fairly easy.
