The 028 I just picked up for $25 will limb just fine but when you put it in oak over 8 inches thick it just seems to fall out of the power band. Pulling the muffler off the cylinder looks good and was wondering if when I take her apart to replace the rings could anything be done (cheaply and easily) with a dremel to the head to help it out a little? I don't know if I will mod the muffler or not. If the muffler mod will really help it out I would probably do it but this thing is utterly reliable and that is how I want it to stay.

Other than maybe the muffler, I wouldn't mod anything unitil you know for sure what the problem is. It may not even need rings... What is your compression?

Would an 028 need a muffler mod? When did your EPA regs start restricting them?

Don't have anyway to test compression other than pulling the rope. This thing is old and never been freshened up so a set of rings was my first guess. On the good side it will start with just a slight tug on the rope once warmed up.

Some of these old saw have fine compression... Borrow a tester...

Nope not lean in fact I had it a little fat on the high side. Maybe I am just expecting too much from the 028 compaired to the 361.
Hmmm I wonder what a good modder could do for it? Do you think it could make close to 5hp?

Having just rebuilt three 028SWB, these saws spin great with .325 on a 16" bar in 12" oak. Chains just sharpened. If it is loading up, tear it down and see why. For the money it can not hurt. These saws surprised me they were more than expected. I was impressed. Solid saw, the only things wrong with these were cause by previous owners.

Mine pulls a 20" bar full-skip chain with no problems. But I'm also cuttin' in the Pacific Northwest softwoods. The saw was my Dad's (I have it on permanent loan! :biggrinbounce2:). He bought it brand new in 1984. Still has great compression and has no mods whatsoever. I started using it as a climbing saw as well. One great little saw.

Did ya go a little to "fat" on the high screw causin' it to bog out?

As to your statement"side it will start with just a slight tug on the rope once warmed up".. Forget the rings as they appear to be fine. If the rings are bad this thing could be a bear to start. Your own statement tells the story. Does this saw have electronic ignition? A clogged gas filter may be the culprit, Ken
