just acquired 038 AV Super and need any manuals. Stihl site only have generic 038 which includes S and Mag versions. it seems to me that there was a regular version 038 smaller than both of those. any ideas? I would like to get IPL and shop manual too, if any one has them. web sites currently up with stihl manuals don't have the 038 (but I did download all the others they had!!!)

thanks,

ms

The 038s were pretty much the same saw as far as I know with the only differences being P/Cs, chain brake, mufflers and such. I don't have the service manual, but do have an IPL. Sent PM.

Good pick up. I've been looking for an 038S or MII for my collection, great saw.

038 AV Super

I had been wanting a 70 cc class saw to add to my 018 and 290, now I got 3 saws and less money.

something will sell. if 038 is heavy, I will sell for profit. allegedly has new bar and chain and needs sprocket. will set up rim drive if I do the work. I have not seen it yet, but spotted it on craigslist and had my nephew grab it for me. I will get and bring from CA to CO in early August.

Nephew was quite impressed. he said it is very clean. he said it sounded way more serious than the homeowner equipment he has been around:chainsawguy: :hmm3grin2orange:

The 038s are great saws, built like a tank, but a lttle heavy compared with newer ~70 cc stuff. I've a magnum I run, and a bunch of supers I'm fixing up. The magnum pulls a 25 in bar well and has a fair amount of torque, reliable too.

The 038 is no light weight, especially compared to new construction and definitely nothing like homeowner saws of today. But they are bullet proof in the reliability department and parts when needed are still available because Stihl sold a crap load of 'em. Good luck.

038 super

Thanks everyone, I have an IPL, now thanks to two of you that responded SUPER FAST to my post.

when I first saw the saw for sale, I checked the displacement and said to myself "it is an old saw, wonder what arboristsite regulars have to say."

I logged in and found almost all positive comments about this old, Stihl battle tank. I wanted a saw in this displacement class so I had my nephew go and buy it for me (he is local to the sale, I have not seen saw yet).

Thank you all and a great site!

I've got a regular old 038 Av,good old saw, reliable .I have to laugh when I hear people mumbling about them being "heavy" saws.Heavens, they only weigh about 15 pounds plus the weight of the bar chain and fuel, likely less than twenty.

You guys will have to eat your Wheaties or something,ha.:hmm3grin2orange:

wheaties

I have actually been considering that as one of the features of the "heavy" saw. I will be in better shape.

I have a rule of thumb: every hour of chainsawing creates 3 hours of cleanup.

with the 038 on the job, I may have to raise that number a bit...

I certainly wasn't complaining 'bout the weight, just advising the gentlemen what to expect. I have logged many hours on 'em in the past and would love to have one to add to line up. I've kept an eye out for one for quite awhile, but 'round here people just don't give 'em up. Guess I'll have to start looking on Craig'slist......:)

The ole man has an old Lamb, now that is a heavy saw. Just set the 1/2" chain on the log and let the weight of the saw walk through the wood.

The 038 has been considered by many as Stihl's best. The Mag II is still sought after.
