I’m trying to get some info on this top cover/shroud. I picked it up off eBay recently. Was going to install it this evening when I noticed it had a extra “guide” piece on the PTO side that the original top cover doesn’t. Is this a cold weather thing? Or possibly an update to improve airflow/cooling? Part number is 1119-084-0902 part number on original is 1119-084-0901. I’m gonna look them up on the IPL but gotta wait until Monday. Any ideas?

That might be the version for Brazil? Or for the ms380 381?

It’s possible I suppose. I just searched 038 magnum on YouTube found quite a few with the 1119-084-0902 style top cover. I don’t think it’s a cold weather thing. I’m starting to wonder if it was a revision or updated style top cover to improve cooling? Seems kinda counterintuitive since there’s more coverage around the cylinder but I wonder if it’s meant to guide air into that “dead zone” where the flywheel can’t blow air? I may take some temp measurements running both covers. I think that’s the only way I’ll get the answer I’m looking for.

There's allot of different versions of 038s that span many years and cylinder sizes and antivibe connection points depending on the model 038av 038avs, 038 super, magnum, Super Magnum and crankcases are different depending on the model and year. More than likely it's just one of the variations.

So I looked up some part numbers on the IPL, turns out part number 1119-084-0902 is the current production top cover/shroud. Only question left unanswered is if the design change was done to improve cooling. At this point I suspect that's the case but I'm going to do some testing to confirm.

I have two 038 mags and I've worked on several 038's (AV, Super, etc) and I've never seen any difference in AV mounting. The 038 magnum cases are machined a little different for the wider bolt spacing of the 52MM cylinder. I know small changes were made over the years but nothing major that I've ever seen. Not saying you're wrong I've just never seen any glaring differences between the different variants. The MS380, 381, and 382 look the same just styled a little differently on the top.
