I looked for pictures, too. They are out there, but I wasn't able to find any real good ones. Do a Google search for 038 Magnum triple port or something like that and then click on images. You'll see some.

I have an aftermarket dual port muffler that I'm going to convert to a triple port. Not exactly sure how to yet, but I think I have a few options.

Lookup Lakesides MM of a 361 using tubing and stihl blower muffler parts.

Too bad the pictures are gone.....

This was my redneck muffler porting, It was only a mess around but it actually worked far better than I thought. The noise was also quite guttural and enjoyable to listen to. Rather like a 'pop, pop, pop'

I planned to modify a new one with one large side exit but before I got a chance I ended up selling it.

Excellent. PLease post a pic or three when you get it!

That was Andy/Lakeside53 s work. He is still around but very transient in his visits.

The gist is, you decide how big of a port you want and which direction to put the exhaust. Then you drill either a strait or eliptical hole, depending if you want a straight or angled exit, respectively. Then you braze in a piece of mild steel tubing to fit the ex screen components from a Stihl BR blower. The come in at least two sizes, and the blower ex ports are round tubes. It is not just a screen into/over the tube. The screens are designed to give LOTS of surface area in relation to the size of the tubing.

If I have confused you do a search here on Lakeside53 and 361 Stihl MM. The pics are gone but the details all there.

I remember when he posted that thread. I have never brazed, but it looks as though it's time to begin learning. If I could find one authentic mag 2 muffler (my "mag 2" has a single port) to work from, I might be able to replicate it. No reason to not change them all over, unless they would need new carbs. The owner's manual doesn't reference the mag 2 at all.

Good luck finding a Mag 2 triple port muffler. If you do find one in good shape, be prepared to pay for it. Otherwise, just buy a reproduction dual port muffler and add your own port.

If you're not set up to braze, bring it to someone to MiG weld. If you prep the area it should take about 30 seconds.

If I get around to it this weekend, I'll do mine and take some pictures. All this 038 Mag talk has got me fired up to get mine done. But I have a few Jonsereds XF's that are taking up some workbench space right now.

If you have a dual port 038 muffler just drill out the inner baffle a bit with a 5/16 drill. Then take a dremel to the existing outlets and open them as much as possible while keeping the screens. Unless you have hotrod 038 that should do it.

So expand each hole to 5/16 and open the two outlets up a bit. I can do that. However, I sold a legit mag 2 to my buddy, and it may have had the 3 port muff, in which case I might be able to borrow it to use as a model to replicate.....

038 mufflers trade places like folks at a square dance.

What I have seen is 038S with dual ports and 038M and 038MII with dual ports. Also 038S and 038 with singles

Now I am East coast. What I heard in the USA the triple port was an option mainly for loggers in the PNW. For both 038M and 038MII. I've never seen a triple port but have a 038MII, or so the cover says.......

So, a dual port opened up , will work well unless it's screamer that needs more. That is what my 038M and 038S--> 038M conversions use. They are not highly modded other wise. I open up the cage inside then the outlets. Some remove the cage. You can always make things bigger, but smaller is more of a problem

The nice thing about the Lakeside MM is if you make too many ports you just plug one up.

I'd expand the baffle first and open up the existing outlets. It will be louder. If you start porting , playing with squish, carbs , then I don't know.

Mastermind is the person to ask for that. He like Lakeside53 has been a bit skittish.

There is a red label mag2 out there on ebay with a one port muffler. good looking saw, with a rather high asking price. But it is very clean. I have noticed ebay responds quickly to buying pressure. Different models draw differing degrees of interest at different times. I did manage to find a tri-port muffler for a little over thirty bucks just now. I can inspect and perhaps imitate it with any mods I make.

I want to figure out a hack to allow the 038 to accept the 044s HD air filter. It seems the air filter is probably the limiting factor on this saw's performance-- the filter is really pretty small, like that of an 034.

Stihl Über Alles!

You will have to figure out some black magic to get the filter cover to fit if you change the 038 filter... it's all positively linked to each other and all positively crap.. choke and all.. haha

But surely the limiting factor is the bore and flow of the bing carb.. and swapping the filter gets rid of the choke. And that bing carb has pretty decent for flow any way so I am guessing you won't want to get rid of it?

The Bing and the later Tilly carb flow about the same as far as I can tell.

I think those filters are deceptive as to amount of flow as both sides are filtering, that is until they clog up.

MM's ported 038 monster used a stock filter so I think opening a can of worms changing it?

If you cut a lot you should be checking/cleaning the filter about the same time you sharpen the chain. If you don't let it get caked removing it and a few taps will do well. For a good cleaning some dish detergent/water and your fingers, rinse it well then let it dry. The OEM filters last a long time if not abused.

Black magic is all the rage these days... actually tha mark of a true CADdict.

I use an ultrasonic cleaner with 1/4 cup purple cleaner in a quart or so of water, I haven't measured th ewater out precisely. Then I rinse it gently and let it dry. I have several extra filters, so they really shouldn't have to be put back on wet...
My thinking is that Bing and Tillotson are real carburetors, Zama not so much, Walbro in between somewhere. I would be loath to lose the Bong. I wonder if they put larger ones on magnums. Maybe a carb from a 44 or 46 could be substituted. Linkage is a pain, but there is a reason they went to the box AF cover when the 044 came out. It allows a larger filter, and if we open up the outlet, we have to open th inlet is my thinking.

Venturi size is the same for the Bing and the Tilliston put on the supers.

I hear you on the black magic front. I contemplated putting an old 038 Mag cylinder on my 357xp. It was looking so promising with the intake boot, piston stroke, and muffler. Problem is the transfers on the 357 case are wider than the 038 cylinder. Nothing some Jb weld couldn't have fixed but the 357 is too mint to start down that road. This is where I am at with my 2ND 038 super to Mag rebuild.
