How could someone scrap an 038 Magnum? I’m friendly with a couple of the shops I do a lot of business with. I take the stuff they don’t want to work on and owners don’t want back. Usually it’s a pile of box store junk. Ryobis, plastic Homelites, busted trimmers. But sometimes I get good stuff. Take the bad with the good and keep the shop happy with a couple pizzas every couple months. As to what this gem needs, besides a bar, chain and clutch cover I don’t know. Does have a crack in the top cover and a piece missing. Piston is perfect, 170psi and blue spark. This one is a keeper.

P&C look aftermarket-y?
Still a good score though and can't complain about 170psi...

Craigslist ad from a while back, shed cleanout deal, looked pretty crusty in the listing pic but cleaned up surprisingly well.
I picked it up for $30 and the guy found the back cover and a brake handle too. Fired right up with some fresh fuel...

stihl chainsaw - $40 (burlington)
Old stihl chainsaw doesnt run asking 40 or best offer

I’ll look better at the jug when I get home. But from what I saw it’s original. The muffler bolts looked like they were never cracked. I think a guy bought this very expensive saw, used it over the years and hadn’t in a few. Probably wouldn’t start so he dropped it at the shop they said it’s 30 years old probably cheaper to buy new than repair and that’s just what he did. The town I live in this is typical. It’s fairly affluent (I definitely have one of the oldest vehicles that isn’t an antique!) and they put a lot of really good stuff out at the curb cause they just replaced it with a new one. In 4 years I’ve gotten a bunch of saws, nice 1986 toro lawn tractor (broke axle bolt), trac-vac leaf collection my wife found, real nice 1981 Coleman lantern in the box. Just to name a few I’m not bragging I’m thankful i was fortunate enough to find this stuff before it was trashed. I’m not ashamed to pull the truck of and grab what someone is putting out.

I could see a shop saying not worth fixing here (canada). Carb kit alone is over 50 bucks for the bing. Not sure what a whole new carb would be worth. Plus they probly figure allnother rubber coklmponents should be changed. Good score though. I would love to find another one. (Got 2 now)

Scrap/road finds are the best. Plays in to my pioneer spirit I guess. I’ve always made this distinction. There’s junk and there’s trash. Trash has no further use, new stuff on the shelf can qualify as that. Go to homedepot or Lowe’s and try to find a quality tool or straight piece of lumber. Junk is subjective. For example, the 11/30 Snapper snowblower I got from a guy in town was “junk” to him. I snagged it before he could put the free sign on! Needed a recoil and fuel line. He replaced it with “trash”. A shiny new troybilt (not the real Troybilt from years ago) with plastic wheels and a Chicom engine from Lowe’s. I am thankful to find the stuff, I use it, gift it or sell. That’s my version of a “green new deal”. This 038 will be a fun build.

Joe, I once thought that my 038 (shown above) was a dead hammer. In fact, all it needed was a new impulse hose (not easy to replace) and some TLC. After that, it ran like a champion. Like I already said, I never should have said good bye to that chain saw.

Funny you say that. While the top end looks new (1119 stamped in it I can’t get a good look on the transfer ports) the pulse line looks pretty brittle. I have plenty on that black Stihl hose so I’ll be looking at it tomorrow
