038 parts

My favorite Brother in law borrowed my 038 the other day, now the chain brake handle is broke and he ran it with the muffler half off.
He said it seemed to get awful loud.

Guess the muffler part was my fault for not making sure the bolts stayed tight.
I would have shut it off and tried to figure out what was wrong though.

There are some used brake handles on ebay for about $11 or $12 has anyone bought anything from any of the Ebay chainsaw stores?

I am going to need a new muffler gasket too, evidently it almost burned the gasket into on one side from being real loose.

My biggest concern is, did he hurt it by running it essentially with no muffler?
The piston seems scored slightly on the muffler side but I can't feel the scoring with my finger, just see it.
The carb side, what I can see looks good.
It's not running very good right now, wants to die, I took the carb. apart and cleaned it, checked the intake manifold, the fuel filter etc.
Any thoughts???????

He performed a muffler mod for you, richen the carb settings.
Seriously though, I think the saw is fine it will run like that because you opened the exhaust up quite a bit. Sounds like you might have had some carbon build-up, I wouldnt be surprised if the markings were superficial.

I have had great luck with e-bay parts, but I only buy from established sellers.

If I get a carburetor kit for that saw, do I just need to know that it is a Bing or do I need more info?

I don't recall seeing any other numbers on the carburetor.

There were only two Bing carbs for that saw, but both were 48's and used the same kit.
