I took a few pictures of the 038 I rebuilt this afternoon. It seems after around 15 years of service ,for a tree company,it ate it's piston. The cylinder was fine[no kidding].Jacob J.,came up with the piston, and pt side bearing, and case gasket, many thanks J.J.Often times the question comes up about installing the bearings and crank. My method is to heat the crankcase halves with an industrial heat gun, then tap the bearings in,as shown in one picture.I put the crank in the freezer for a few hours, heat the inside races of the bearings, and tap in the crank with a rubber mallet .The rest of the procedure is pretty straight forward .This is one of the 15 to 20 I rebuild in the course of a year.

It lives again

Here is the end results, after a few test cuts.Works fine.Maybe,if lucky, this saw will see another 10 years,or so of service.

Real nice al !

What do you do with all these rebuilds you do ?

Oh the rebuilds, about half are mine, there are in the shed.I have 3 of my own yet to do.The rest, are for whoever has the money :) Most aren't complete rebuilds, seals, etc.,which I can't really say are rebuilds, but still require a tear down.I'll say this, they are a lot easier than working on D4 Cats.It can be a challenge, the little parts, and my fat fingers.Hey,maybe I could retire and be an engine builder? No,those poor guys catch too much guff,I think I'll just be a part time tinkerer. :)
