My 038 farm boss is not idling right- wants to die.

I checked the boot and it doesn't seemed to be cracked, I used carb cleaner so I could see it better. Is there a good way to check that without taking it off.

If I have take it off how do I go about it. I had to put it back on a few years ago but don't remember how.

I was using it and the buffer tore into and the saw almost fell in half. I do remember I liked to never got the boot back on.
Thanks
Dan

Take off the air filter, remove the two hex nuts holding the carb on, disconnect the throttle linkage, disconnect the fuel line, and pull the carb off.

Thanks Tom
I pulled the carb off and took it apart and cleaned it. thought I had found the problem it had a little wad of something brown and fuzzy (a gerbil ?) under the screen on the carb.
Don't know how it got there, I have always used a filter and the filter looks clean now.

The boot looks ok, but it still won't idle, wants to die, does exactly as before.
Any ideas?

I would check a couple things; all plastic lines (like fuel line, impulse line, tank vent) for any signs of cracking or detioriorating, check fuel filter, check spark plug. I would take the carb apart and clean it and put in a new gasket kit, if something got behind the screen could be more in one of the passages or fuel gunk that needs to be cleaned out.

If that fails, then it may be an air leak. That could be as easy as changing crank oil seals, or it could be harder if the cylinder gasket or case gasket is leaking.

Good luck

Get it started again and make a minor adjustment of the idler jet, turn it in clockwise and that will increase your idle speed. If this does not solve the problem. Then make a very minor adjustment to the Low jet, one way or the other, probably a tad counterclockwise. If that helps, great, if not, then go the other way a tad. It is usually a combination of the L and LA that improves the starting and idle of a Stihl saw.
